My opinion is to just kit bash Chaos Marines and Space Wolves, paint them in a suitably evil color and use both codexs! (not at the same time of course, but it will effectively let you field two different armies for the cost of one and will look in character for both.)

 

Really, I'd suggest just using the Space Wolf rules, and having them as a renegade faction - SWs have been known to go renegade before . Rename the units/characters to something that fits your independent/chaotic theme a bit better, and bobs your uncle!

The only downside is that with the new release of SWs, there are a lot of people playing them, but at least yours will be a bit more original than most.

 

I wouldn't be too sure of that, Max. Since the general consensus is the CSM codex sucks. Not my opinion, but I have seen numerous "I'm gonna do Khorne Wolves" threads lately.

Now as to the discussion, I would say use the SW codex and just have fun converting the models. The new SW list is pretty solid (even if there are some holes in the dex), and a lot of the units really lend themselves to fun explanations.

At the GT, I saw someone fielding chaos space puppies, using Some SW models in his Chaos SM army.. he even modelled a defiler to be a giant dog, using the legs from a defiler, positioning them as a doggie, one of the claws as a tail, and the front of a landspeeder as the head, complete with ears and whatnot.. it was very nicely done and looked awesome.
