Just wondering how easy is this game to get into? My group of friends doesnt have the time or inclination to play warhammer these days, so we have been dabbling in strategy board games like Risk and playing the odd game of blood bowl 2nd edition and we are trying to avoid things like magic because of the addictive quality of blind packs and because one of us used to be ranked, anyway i keep seeing xwing mentioned and we all love the star wars and it seems to be too good to be true.

anyway can someone sell this to me, we have 4-6 players, money isnt an issue, time is the main focus, is it easy to pick up and play,is there any pay to win elements, can you explain why this is a game to get into, does it work well with multiple players, 4 players would generally be our minimum and we like to pair up or play the same game rather than two tables of two.

Bits, grab a copy of X-Wing with both hands. My personal opinion is, it's fucking awesome! :good:

The rules are so quick to pick up it's almost laughable. But they're a good solid set of rules.
I had them down after my second game. I still double-check things now and then, but that's more of an old habit of mine than anything to do with the game itself.
The cards are clearly laid out, there's ample tokens etc for you to keep track of Critical Hits, Stress, Actions etc and the gameplay is fast.
It only ever tends to slow down if both squadrons are down to a single ship. But then the fun is trying to get the angle for a game-winning shot in.

I started out with two starter sets, an X-Wing, a Y-Wing, a TIE Fighter and a TIE Advanced. That was months ago, and I've only bought a Lambda Shuttle since then and I haven't tried half the pilot/ability combos that I've thought of yet :)

In short, go for it. You won't be disappointed :good:

One of the best games I have played in my 23 years of gaming.

For starters, its Star Wars and I get to collect the ships I grew up with. Ace.

But the main thing is accessibility. One starter set, a few ship packs and you are sorted. The rules are stupidly easy to learn and have infinite scope for tactics, fleets, ship load outs etc and the rules are the rules. No additional rule books, no painting, no scenery, no consulting charts or tables, just fast paced gameplay.

Like Tawa said, with the cards you use to build your squads you have all the rules and abilities in front of you. The game is excellently paced and flows from turn to turn with the in-game mechanics making for some awesome games. Nothing is OP'ed and every list has a tactical counter. With between 5-7 ships per side in a 100 point game its a small and compact game with defeat lurking at every turn of a movement dial.

Due to the ease of the rules, this allows you to approach the game in the way you want to play; TIE swarms, bounty hunter lists, surgical strikes from the rebels, there is no right or wrong way to play. It also looks bloody ace.

Compared to 40k, this is a no brainer. Relatively inexpensive, simple to grasp, not a single beardy element, I enjoy playing X Wing immensely. You can get 3-4 games into a gaming session and each will be different from the last. The last time me and Tawa played, we had one game that was a war of attrition and very tactical. The next was a brutally short encounter of less than ten turns. Its that diversity that I love.

Get a copy, get some ships, throw down some asteroids and roll some dice :good:

This thread has made me want to get into the game, and with the rules being as easy as Tawa pointed out (and the fact that it's fucking STAR WARS) I might even be able to get the girlfriend on it! With the exception of 40k she's as into Sci-Fi as I am, and Risk just sucks with two players...interesting. Very interesting.

Well im certainly interested, so it seems no terrain is required, ship sets seem well priced, does the game work well with multuple players ? 4 or more?

They include rules for multiple players. Basically players are split between the two factions and control a portion of the ships, then it's team Empire vs team Rebel. Though if you wanted to have a free for all dogfight between 3+ people it's entirely possible, simply because of how ship activation works.

The game has no 'player turns', where one player moves all his stuff, shoots, etc. Rather, all players do their planning, movement and shooting at the same time as dictated by the skill of their pilots. It's one of the great things about the game, you're never sitting there twiddling your thumbs waiting for your opponent to finish his/her turn.

As for the terrain, you get 6 card asteroids in each starter set, which is all the terrain you'll ever need. Grab a a piece of black felt from a material shop to act as a playing surface (mine was $5 for a square metre), and you're golden. Wave 5 is gonna include some debris fields, to change the terrain up a bit.

By far the funniest thing about this game is asteroid placements at tournaments. Each player gets to place 3 of the 6 asteroids before the game starts, and it's easily the tensest part of the game. For all the thought and care people give it you'd think it was a game about placing asteroids!

I was pondering X-Wing; I liked the idea of a small force of elite Imperial ships, because I love a lot of the designs. No purchases yet. Then the Armada rules came out, and all I can think is 'hell yes!'.

Now reading this thread, I'm back to thinking about X-Wing. :p
