imo the Eldar shuriken catapult is the best basic weapon in the game ,S4 and Assault 2, ok the range isn't great but in the hands of the dire avengers with the added range they have, and BS4 with blade storm, i end up taking full squads off.

Pulse rifle is best alrounder i think, the only thing that makes them rubbish is the people carrying them :p other than that, the bolter purely cause of the BS

It is definantly the Tau pulse rifle:

str 5, AP 5, range 30, rapid

no other baisic weapon even matches it
Great yes, but BS 3 normally compared to BS 4 for a Necron Warrior's Gauss Flayer which has 1 less S and 6" less range but bypasses to wound on a 6 and can glance even a mighty Land Raider on a 6. Easily matching the prowess of a Tau Pulse Rifle.

I am going to have to go with the Pulse Rifle as well. The extra range combined with the higher strength is a massive bonus for the gun. Anyone who has been on the receiving end of a FoF attack as well can attest to the brutality of the gun. The Gauss Flayer is indeed good but they are found on more expensive troops than the PR which limits it a bit further.

Good point. Although Necron Warriors have +1 T, +1 Armour Save, WBB, and better Ld meaning as the turns go on, more Necron Warriors remain to fire.

Anyhows I've gone from best basic weapon to best basic troops at firing but a weapon's overall performance depends on who is wielding it.

I think the nature of the question should ignore BS. therefore the best basic weapon is probably the gauss rifle as it always glances on 6's I believe.

Hmm I'm wondering if the trusty Bolter in the hands of a Thousand Son who is a Troop Unit with his Inferno Bolts would constitute the best basic weapon in 40k?

On stats alone The Pulse Rifle is probably the best,
but it really depends on the context your using your basic weapon in as to which is the best one.

The Close Combat weapon, well im really tempted to say Rough Rider hunting lance, but is that a basic CC weapon?

In fact what is a basic combat weapon? are they all not the same?

Yall are forgetting the almighty Assualt Cannon... 4 shots 24" Range S6 Ap4 Rending. That can drop anything as well.. LR, Greater Daemons, Avatars, Wraithlords.. Even comes TL on the LR Crusader..

Close Combat I would have to say the new Manreaper that Typhus gets or the CCW that Eldar Farseers get which triples strength (if they still have it.. I know 3rd Ed).. dont know the name..
