Welcome to the Houserules and Homebrews forum (Also known as H&H).

This is where you come to post the stats on that custom character whose background you posted over at Fluff. It's also where you can post your common sense workaround to some particularly murky or unloved rule.

If it isn't in the books (but you think it should be) it comes here.

Just remember guys, anything that is posted here is someone's bit of handiwork, so be tactful in your critiques. Nobody wants to put a lot of effort into some new unit, or a brilliant houserule idea only to hear "This sucks!" If you think it's bad, explain (kindly as possible) what can be done to improve it, or where you think it needs balanced. If you think it's good, be sure to say so!

Keep it positive, productive and prolific.

If it's a homebrew codex, it should be fine.

However, for any units, models, options, etc that are mirrored by an existing codex, do not put those stats in, just say "See Codex: X, pYY"

So, for example "Emperor's Children Terminators may be equipped with Sonic Blasters for the same price as in a unit of Noise Marines. One model may be equipped with a Blastmaster for the same price as in a unit of Noise Marines. See Codex: Chaos Space Marines, p.97"

Or
"Troops:
Noise Marines
See C:CSM p.39 and p. 97 Except as Follows: <insert changes> "

We love to see homebrew codices, but you just need to be careful not to give away stuff that's in an existing codex. Sound fair?

Why not put in stuff from an existing codex?:( Maybe someone doesn’t have the codex it’s from and doesn’t understand what the author is getting at? What could it hurt?

Because Games Workshop is kind of picky about making people actually *buy* their books.
If you post stuff from a GW codex, it makes it so you do not need to buy their book, and that pisses them off.

It violates their copyrights and Intellectual Property, and it's the kind of thing that leads to legal action, against the board and/or the person who posted it.

So if you include a unit, weapon, special rule, etc from a GW book then you just give a page number. If someone doesn't have that book, that's just too bad. They'll either have to borrow it from a friend or buy their own copy.

Chances are, if you;re writing something that references another codex, then the people interested in your work will already own the codex you;re referencing.

After all, if you're writing, say Codex: World Eaters, then it's a good bet that anyone who cares to see it will already own Codex: Chaos Space Marines.

I have included a disclaimer within my work, that where points and stats are the same it is coincidence as it is a reflection of my own valuation of the unit rather than one actively influenced by the GW Design Studio.

I don't know for sure if that suffices, but I can't see why not.

That makes sense I'll be sure to include that disclaimer in my upcoming fandex.

I think that Games Workshop could still argue that your lying... its all to do with being determined in courts with that sort of things isnt it? Otherwise anyway trying to plagiarise work could just say, its just a coincidence. It might be an idea just to reference the books anyway, just to cover yourselves. Besides, I think the Statlines are all posted on the website arnt they, next to the model your viewing.
