Bit out of left field but is it just me that is reminded of Imperium vs Chaos in the war in Syria.
The Syrian government troops are the Imperium - prepared to go to any length such as chemical weapons to win. Definitely not the good guys but compared to IS they are.
The IS troops are the forces of Chaos. For me they remind me of the Word Bearers and their devotion to Chaos undivided.
The other real world type example would be the Eastern Front in WW2 where the Soviets are the Imperium and the Nazis as the forces of Chaos.
