I doubt it would help. Anyway, it'd be released for one console, get the person into gaming, then they'll get depressed in console wars. To be honest, most games, from my (limited) understanding of depression, could help somewhat. If they are addicted to something that they like and doesn't cause them harm, they won't feel all depress-ey, they'll be too busy mashing buttons.

Depression isn't something that goes away if you happen to be distracted for a bit.

to our knowledge*

As to this, I've found that games do help me when I'm upset or sad. I know my Minecraft world is littered with structures that I've built up when I'm really stressed. I don't remember the actual reason, but I can point to a tower or house and go 'Yeah that's from when I was sad'. Makes me a little proud to be constructing something out of 'nothing', and that helps me feel better.

I never said it did (this is assuming you were directing that at me). I was really going down the 'who has time to be depressed when they're obsessed' route. If you have something you really love, and look forward to every day, you surely can't be as depressed all the time. It takes your mind off of things.

whenever i get pissed off or sad about something i either start painting or go work in my workshop, helps quite a bit, chopping firewood is always good if your in a shitty, nothing like swinging an axe at something.

Cant see why it wouldnt at least give them a positive experiance to look foward to.

I could imagine if one is really depressed they could find themselves rather attached to a game, as there own little virtual world, which would yes be good for there depression but its really just a band aid fix isnt it.

I don't think the game is designed as a cure all but rather a form of therapy.

I suppose it might provide a positive experience and maybe provide some life skills to deal with certain situations.

It's a bit sad when we rely on AI for comfort and guidance rather than friends.

I think this just about sums up my opinion on modern western society these days. Makes me wish this part of the world got hit with an EMP wave just to make people realize how far they have fallen.
