Releasing the Venerable Dreadnought model which is more expensive than the standard dreadnought model. It used to be you could mark a dreadnought as venerable just by putting some nice extra stuff on it.. now tournament wise you have to use the special model.
Could you point me to the rules stating that? I find it really difficult to believe.

Tournament wise that has been the request / pressure. Im not saying you MUST use it and that was bad wording on my part. In general GW is somewhat pushy about "if we have models out for it you should use them".

I must say I have never noticed that at the GW tournaments I have been to.

I would think that as long as you show some conversion to make it look like the model you want to use I would think its okie. GW promotes creativity in its players (just look at all the stuff they show on people scratch building and modifying models). If they really wanted everyone to only use a specific model to represent a specific unit and that is it, I doubt they would show all that conversions. I think as long as you put some work into your model and show that its more than just a normal dread than you should be okie.

If I had to use the models to represent units that GW made for them, I wouldn't be able to field 3/4 of my army.

How about the rules that state "All pieces of wargear must be represented on the model"? All models must be made with predominantly GW models meaning I couldnt take a really cool model from let say Warmachine convert it a little and call it an Assassin or Inquisitor. Its just annoying to me the pressure they put to spend more buying there stuff at the incredible prices they charge.

I don't think that rule is hard and fast. It seems like the wargear must be represented is there to make sure a person with a lasgun doesn't all of a sudden have a meltagun and popping my tank. I can come up with 30 excuses why my inquisitor does not have a rosarius modelled on him (its under his shirt, its in his pocket, its under his hat etc). I think its more of an overkill rule than anything else.

In terms of using mainly gw models, it makes sense, they are trying to sell models it is their tournament. It doesn't mean it ruins your creativity to have unique looking models on the battlefield, just have to be a bit more picky in and work a bit harder with what you have, the range of GW is pretty extensive.

Just remember if you are not playing at a tournament you can design and create all you want and use whatever miniatures you want. Take comfort in that

Mine is just repped by having a whole bunch of added purity seals. I haven't run into a complaint about that yet.

Again please see my first post.. the general feeling I get from GW is a very pushy "buy our models for everything". And as I said before the "must" was a bad choice of word on my part. Must is just the feeling I get from them. Its obsesive compulsive on my part now adays to not do any "In Lieu Of" or "this model is really"... I've been going WYSIWIG more and more in my modeling, army building, list building these past 2 years (now that I can afford stuff) and them putting out this gaudy Venerable Dread that was vastly diffrent and more expensive than normal dreads really irked me as a well you need to pay for this if you want to play it. Back in the old days you could tell a Ven was one with lots of purity seals or just any other adornements... now you have to ask to know for sure. Not to mention I already HAD three dreads with lots of stuff on it as my Vens and 3 plain janes as my regulars.

Well, it is GW and they do want you to use their models so i dont think they would have anything against totally convertin a dred but you just cant bring a WM(warmachine) model to represent this dred.

I someone were to put a normal dread on the table and tell me before the game starts that it is a Ven dread, I wouldn't complain. So long as I know.

the only time I see a problem is if one is venerable, and one isn't, but even then, as long as they look different i'm fine with that.

personally, I hate the venerable dreds. they don't look like an armored walking sarcophogus
in january I will be working on my terminator Pattern venerable Dreadnought.

I hated the GW Venerable dread so much I sprang the cash to buy a forgeworld Mk IV Venerable Dread.

It looks great, and as soon ans the other arm and base arrive I'll get it painted.
