Good Morning all;

So I now have a number of finished Iron Warriors units, and I would like to protect the paint and for the tanks I have used weathering powders.

So.. How should I apply Varnish? I would like a non-gloss look so that means spray? Or does some advice?

Personally I use the Matt Varnish in spray form from Army Painter. It works just fine and protects the models fairly well. I also prefer the matt look, so that suited me just fine.

If you use decals, remember to apply them before you varnish.

If you want the best protection available, you would need a gloss coat followed by a matt varnish coat. I think it's a bit too much, but after that you can pretty much toss it off your car on the highway and only the concrete will take any damage.

Not even kidding, I hate spray can varnishes.

I believe that GW do a paint-pot varnish? Lahmian Medium? IIRC this is a matt varnish. Aside from that, Humbrol Matt Varnish always came highly recommended.

I personally use Satin varnish from Vallejo through my airbrush. Matte varnish dulls donw metal IMO and gloss makes it too shiny. Satin varnish doesn't cause any noticeable change so thats why I use it.

I don't recommend the GW Satin spray varnish, Purity seal. I ruined several perfectly good models with this, and no amount of re-coating would restore the damage.

I also recommend the army painter matt varnish spray. Works a treat!

Great thanks for the advice... I will be ordering some more Army Painter silver spray soon (my Iron warriors Cheat). But I shall add this to the order.
