Dear Friends,

I will be playing in few weeks a FRIENDLY tournament.

I have prepared bellow 1850 points Ultramarine army list taking into consideration de minis I own.

I would appreciate your input and advice and improvements.

At the end of the list I make a brief explanation of my strategy.

  • Sternguard Veteran Squad - 4x Combi-Melta, Drop pod
  • Scout Squad (70pts) - Camo Cloaks, 5x Sniper Rifle

  • Stormraven Gunship - Storm Strike Missile, Twin Linked Lascannons, Twin Linked Multi Meltas
  • Aegis Defense Line (70pts) - Comms Relay

EXPLANATION:

(1) Librarian is attached to the Grav Centurions unit. This unit will arrive in the Stormraven in the second turn and will be deployed to destroy sensible and critical enemy units.

(2) Librarian will roll in telepathy for Shrouding and/or Invisibility to increase the centurions survivability.

(3) Aegis with comms Relay will help increase probability that my reserves will be arriving in second turn.

(4) The 3 dropods will hunt TANK and HORDES.

(5) Devastators will be combat squaded and located one unit in Aegis and other unit where necessary in my deploy area.

(6) Rhino and Razorback will hunt for my half of the table MISSION TARGETS.

(7) Sniper Scouts will be infiltrated (when possible) in the enemy half of the table to hunt mission targets.

(8) Land speeder storm will outflank in late turns to occupy MISSION TARGETS.

I would be tempted to not keep the Scouts in the Land Speeder in Reserve just to limit the guess of when/where they are to come in. There's 1/3 a chance with Outflank you'll get boned, some people count on those kind of odds for success in this game (like using S7 weapons against AV12). 3+ is pretty decent to come in from Reserves on, I use three Drop Pods and a couple Stormravens in a lot of my games with very little issue. If you dropped the ADL w/ Comms you could up your smaller Tactical squad to 10 man and run them in a Rhino. I love my Razorbacks, I really do, but they just don't speak up as much as a 10 man squad in a Rhino.

As a side note, re-writing your list from the simple copy+paste from Battlescribe makes it a lot easier to read. For example,

* Command Squad (175pts)
(And They Shall Know no Fear, Chapter Tactics)
Frag and Krak Grenades, Power Armour
* Drop Pod
Storm Bolter
* Veteran
Bolt Pistol, Meltagun
* Veteran
Bolt Pistol, Meltagun
* Veteran
Bolt Pistol, Meltagun
* Veteran
Bolt Pistol, Flamer
* Veteran
Chainsword, Flamer

could just be:

Command Squad - 3x Melta Guns, 2x Flamers, Drop Pod

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your quick reply.

Taking into consideration your advice I have remake the list taking out the aegis line, increasing the tactical from 5 to 10 men and changing the razorback for a rhino and with the extra points I have given a meltabomb to each tactical squad. i have also change the 2 Plama cannons with 2 Laser Cannons in order to deploy the whole devastator squad as one unit with 4 laser cannons.

Please, let me know you all which list you prefer and any advice more you may have to improve it.

THANKS

As a small nudge in equipment, I would drop the Melta Bombs in the Tactical squads for a second Plasma Gun. They've got Krak grenades for Monstrous Creatures and Vehicles (and buildings, but really now...). Come to think of it I would drop the other two instances of Melta Bombs and add a 5th Combi-Melta to your Sternguard squad if possible. Maybe my dislike of Melta Bombs is showing, but those two guns I think would serve you better than four models with single attack grenades that are only good in Close Combat.

But you can throw kraks right?
I swear I read that in 6th... I should really read those rules up again in 7th :/ maybe I won't take melta bombs on my sergeants then :(

Dear Friends,

Regarding Storm raven with grav centurions I do not have experince playing with flyers.

Which is your advice?

(1) To deploy Centurions from Storm Raven in hover mode?

Or

(2) To deploy Centurions allways using skies of fury rule despite the fact it means using deepstrike rules?

Any other advice or tips to play grav centurions in storm raven will be very wellcome.

Thanks for your comments.

I play Stormravens a ton being a Blood Angel player foremost, and always disembark troops via Hover mode. Since this leaves you vulnerable, when I only use a single 'Raven I always come on the board with the minimum flying distance You'll effectively be able to reach 30" (18" minimum movement + 12" Melta range) out with your Multi Melta and basically anywhere with your Lascannon or Missiles. My next turn on is when I move the 6" forward, disembark 6", and charge (an average roll of 7" on 2D6, but giving you an assault range of between 14-24"). Were you disembarking a single model such as a dreadnought you may have more luck with scatter, but I would hesitate with the footprint of the Centurions. I've had a lot of bad luck even with Terminator squads. Not that this means never deploy via Skies of Fury, just do so with caution.

Truthfully though I wouldn't put anything in the Stormraven. Run the Centurions up T1 so they're in range T2, that's more than you'll get out of them as far as damage output vs. the Stormraven disembark. Raven's in T2 soonest, bad dice could put it T3/4, which means now 460 points is tied up in Reserve instead of just 200. Plus if you go second and your opponent advances you may end up being able to shoot those Grav Guns T1. I rarely put more than a Dreadnought in my Stormravens these days.
