OK, please be patient... I've just got back into 40k after a loong break (last time I played was 2nd edition rules). I'm a bit confused by the relationships between the different rulebooks that GW has on its website.

There are two different books here
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440162a&prodId=prod2160089a and here http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440162a&prodId=prod1620012a, and a rulebook in the Dark Vengeance box-set.

Please could someone tell me how they are different? Is it just the amount of fluff involved, or something more fundamental to playing the game?

Thanks!

The first link is just the rules of the game. The second is the additional fluff, pictures, instructions, adverts and such at the back of the book (and pretty much double its weight!)

"The Rules" is just that. It is the game rules without the fluff and hobby sections. Probably your best bargain if you are more interested in the gaming aspect.

"The Big Rule Book" contains tons off fluff, pictures, etc. Plus the rules. It is a nice book, but at almost 500 pages is a bit of a pain to tote around.

"The Dark Vengeance Rule Book" is the same as "The Rules" (technically the other way around). It is a pocket sized softcover that contains just the game rules. You can probably pick one up on ebay for about $25-30 USD...however if you are interested in the models the Dark Vengeance box is a great buy.
