As some of us know I am starting an Apocalypse Now themed Marine Army. Now I have armies that have themes but they have all grown out of the army list. Example Mech Guard became Blitzkrieg. This army however is different, I want the theme and conversions to lead the Army List. One thing stands in my way, I would never play the army if its useless on the battlefield. Now Im not asking for a themed army that is also Tier 1. Just an army that doesn't loose by just turning up.

So the points limit is 1500pts because i really want to take it to Throne of Skulls(GT).

So to repeat the theme, the theme is: Apocalypse Now

The Conversion and unit ideas so far are:

1. Chopper conversions of both the Talon and Raven.
2. Hover 'Surf' Boards count as Jump packs or Bikes
3. Crashed Chopper = Drop pod

So what do people think?

My belief is that there should be a minimum of 5 Choppers to definitely put home the Theme:

FAST ATTACK – Storm Talon Gunship: 125 Points
Skyhammer missile launcher
FAST ATTACK – Storm Talon Gunship: 125 Points
Skyhammer missile launcher
FAST ATTACK – Storm Talon Gunship: 125 Points
Skyhammer missile launcher

HEAVY SUPPORT – Storm Raven: 230 Points
Hurricane bolters
HEAVY SUPPORT – Storm Raven: 230 Points
Hurricane bolters

Total = 835pts

Leaving 665pts
To add in a HQ and Troops

Troops Should i
1. drop pod in a Tactical Squad and then have units of scouts in LS Storms?
2. All Scouts

HQ:
Has to ride a Hover board really i think. Should he be joined by 'Jump pack' Vanguard or 'Bike' Command Squad

So what do people think? Have you got any original ideas you would like to see me do in this army?

Let me start by saying: I don't know Apocalypse Now.

Let me continue by saying: kudos for wanting to make a competitive themed list. This is nearly anything I write up (you should see my crazy SpaceWolves/BloodAngels).

Now. Here are a few ideas/comments.

1. Make sure those Ravens have Lascannons, simply because you don't have tank busters otherwise.

2. Super totally radical idea: Don't use Codex Marines. Use Dark Angels. Sammael is perfect for your hover board, because he's a jet bike. You can throw a bunch of marines on bikes as troops, and instead of using lots of fliers for your choppers, you can flood the board with Landspeeders. Typhoons give you firepower almost on par with what you were suggesting out of the Stormhammers. Since they can be linked to RW Troop squads, you can even free up fast attack on top of those for Nephilim choppers too. If you THEN ally in a cheap marine codex, you could use 2 troop choices as scouts in Storms, just to have more choppers that way.

3. In a similar idea to above, if you don't want Dark Angels, I'd suggest White Scars. Just use Khan and maybe a single squad of bikes. I'm not sure about Drop Pods, because you really, REALLY will need to have some solid units on the board to start with over half your army in reserves (fliers have to be). Just because the rules might allow you to Reserve your whole army, you don't want to lose because you can't enter play and the enemy peicemeals what's left.

Go to the video shop this instant !

How could you have gotten so far with such a gap in your education?

First, I recommend Raven Guard for your force because of the "scout" move they all get. I would consider a Dev squad with heavy bolters as your drop pod, as the marines have all grabbed the HMGs from the wreck. If you go Raven Guard, have two Vanguard Vets with 'packs to be the surfer dudes. If you want to be really "fluffy" arrange it so they end their scout move near to the "wreck" like they just swept by after a bad juke turn.

On an aside, you could model HB sponson Predators as Riverine Patrol Craft, and get them in theme. Be hard to use on a dry board, but it would be fun.

Thank you for the Kudos, enjoyed the look of your Stormreavers. If i manage to ever complete this army would love to give it a game sometime. Ravens with Lascannons makes sense but i have managed to get other tank busters in my list (see below)

That was my concern of drop pods but one can work because it will always deep strike turn 1. An answer i have considered to stopping my list arriving in piecemeals is a communications relay on an aegis defense line. That alongside Escort craft could mean everything turns up turn 2

Agreed, very good film

I haven't seen it either or Full Metal Jacket.

But, I like the list... a lot.
Cheers

Love that model conversion idea, could allow me to take all sorts of Rhino chassis'

Melta bombs

HQ – Command Squad: 220 Points
Space marine bike
Melta bombs
4 Grav guns

Remove the points values from the Command Squads before the Copyrighthammer comes down on us.

Is anything going in your Stormravens? Or are they just there as flying tanks? If so, I understand your chopper-palooza, but maybe what you should do instead is use two Marine Chapters.. using the ally rules you'd need two HQs, but you'd get four Stormtalons instead.

Small oversight, all fixed now
