I've always wondered why the necrons have so little selection. 12 choices+2 C'tan, not much with very very few options besides the Lords.

Currently in the Black Library books there is a lot to help them expand. Right now they have only began to awaken, a simply 'scouting' force some books have said. Their true might yet to be seen so I got thinking. What kind of units could we see in the future? The books contents I can only hope will one day will be leading my forces.

HQ choices:

Soul Drinkers series, a Lord of Necron Lords. So much power in one being, perhaps even strong as a C'tan, probably not. A whole planet of necron lords are at his beck and call. He swarms his enemies with millions of warriors overwhelming them with simple numbers, flayed ones wear the corpses of the dead and lay in wait like spiders for the next morsel. Necron tanks were another thing he used, with a mortal the tank would suck helpless people into it transporting them back to the Lord. They would then be dropped in a vat of acid only to increase his power, when wounded he wasnt even at full strength. Larger than a common Lord he was huge with 4 arms (cant recall if this is 100% correct).

The Ultramarine series, 'The Swarm Lord' who was made of millions of tiny scarabs, smaller than the ones we see on the tabletop. Unstoppable as long as he had more scarabs to become his body. They eventually had to run from him.

The C'tan Void Dragon shall rise again! Who knows when though.

The C'tan Outsider, he'll be back...eventually.

Vanilla C'tan, there were hundreds at one time! Maybe an artifact is found containing a part of ones essence and they rise once more to reclaim their empire and take revenge on those who 'fed' (other C'tan) off them.

Elites:

'Disciples' or some such for each of the C'tan. Nightbringers with double bladed staffs excellent for close combat that puts fear into a Khorne Terminator. The Deceivers for utter trickary, hard to hit but decently effective maybe they help other units nearby so its harder to hit them or help WBB rolls. Also perhaps a really mean trick for them is they come in as 2 groups. 1 the real group, the other an illusion who die the same way with wounds but cant shoot or harm enemies. Can get into assault, soak up damage and than poof no more illusion. Void Dragon and Outsider not too sure. Perhaps for the Void Dragon helpful units that aid your technolgy such as a monolith, shield it or maybe help gauss shots.

Heavy:

Necron tanks, the one from Soul Drinkers who suck in infantry. They make rolls and if failing are sucked in to an unknown fate.

Other:

In large games a large tower, similiar to Dawn of War. It slowly spreads an aura about it killing off all living things, each turn it expands and if within its range suffer a small strength attack while helping necrons around it. Probably for larger games or campaigns, I built mine with plasticard.

Just some things I've been thinking about lately. What do you all think? Possible or utterly insane?

Yes, most of these units would to be a nice chunk of points, otherwise its unfair.

The reason there are so few units at the moment, you must remember, is because the Necrons are in Phase 1. The next codex will be Phase 2, so will have a lot more types of unit.

Phase 1: Exploration. This is when the Necrons have woken up a few tombs and are exploring the galaxy to see if there is anything worth their interest. Lightly armoured units that disengage (Phase Out) if heavy resistance is encountered, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of enemies.
Phase 2: Conquest. If Phase 1 reveals significant numbers of prey species then Phase 2 is triggered and all the tombs wake up and go to war. That means a lot of units we have not seen before. The Necrons will actively set about taking back the galaxy and asserting their dominance in preparation for Phase 3.
Phase 3: Harvest. Once the prey species have been subdued the Harvest will begin. The massive machines of destruction are revealed, harvesting entire planetary populations in moments.

If Necrons ever get to Phase 3 it means game over for everything else, so GW will probably keep them ticking over in Phase 2 for a while.

It will be. Jervis wants a big escalation of what the Necrons are doing, Phase 2 is the only way to do that for Necrons. GW will hold off on Phase 3 for a while, but it might appear in Apoc before it does in a normal codex.

Isn't the 41st millennium over though?
Wouldn't GW have to go into the 42nd millennium for Phase 2?
Kinda shot themselves in the foot really.
GW has shot themselves in more places then the foot...
But yes, it is about time for the 42 millennium, and i do like these necro ideas. Now all i need is a new necro, inqusiton, and Ad-mech codex and i would be set for life. (traitor guard would be nice to)

Have the Imperial Guard codex next to me, most recent major events for the guard and the Imperium.

998.M41 Third War for Armageddon

2975999.M41 The Battle for Tyrok Fields- Outset of the Despoilers 13th Black Crusade

It looks like less than 1 year Imperial time if the last three #s are the year.

999.M41 Oh No! M 2 K!!! The End is upon us!
