Homeworld: None (Fleet Based Chapter)
Fortress Monastery: "Flames of Rebirth" Nemesis Class Fleet Carrier
Specialty: Air Superiority/ Aerial Assault.
Chapter Strength: Unknown
Battlecry: "On Wings of Flame Turn all to Ash"

Veteran Brother of the 3rd Assault Company

The Chapter at War (Battle Doctrines):

The Obsidian Phoenix chapter takes the love of flying present in all sons of Sanquinius and applies it to their preferred way of waging war to such an degree that many Codex following chapters tend to shun them. If the knowledge of them being a chapter of the cursed founding did not already cause such suspicions to arise. The chapter uses no land based vehicles at all, with the lone exception being land speeders to help support when extreme weather of heavy anti air fire make it all but impossible for them to use their full strength.

There are eight main companies in the chapter.

1st company: Which includes the Chapter master, Fleet Master, 1st company veteran squads and the Phoenix Guard.

2nd-4th Companies: Assault Companies. Squad composition 1 Squad Captain, 10 marines and 1 squad pilot, which is an rotating duty among the squad. Squads in the assault companies tend arrive at the battle field aboard Storm Eagle assault ships or drop pods when air assets are impossible to use or needed else where on the battle field. Because of the Assault companies dual roles as the chapters tactical element, squads will at times be deployed with out their jump packs as they are deployed with them.

5th Company: Devastator Squads and Breacher squads. The 5th companies primary role is to apply heavy firepower to specific targets that air support are unable to get to. Typically deployed via Drop pods they work in coordination with assault squads to set up lethal killing fields where the enemy has only two choices. Death by torrents of fire power or death by the swirling chaos of close combat. Because of their skills, the 5th company is also tasked with storming enemy ships and the art of void combat. Where a steady shield arm and a well placed shot are more important than the blind fury of a chainblade. It is the veterans of this company that get the honor of flying the chapters Fire Raptor gunships.

6th Company: Support Squadrons. After training as scout, the now fully formed marines must then learn to fly. Under the command of crew chiefs, techmarines that serve the Master of the Forge, they learn not only how to pilot but also how to maintain and if needed repair the chapters air assets. Typically flying Storm talons and Xiphon Interceptors their missions range from escorting Thunderhawks and Storm Ravens, to providing ground support to hunting down what ever enemy has to challenge the chapters dominance of the skies. Squadrons that work exceptionally well together tend to find themselves assigned to the same squads when they move on to the 2nd -5th companies. It is not uncommon for squads to also return to service in the support squadrons depending on if the circumstances of a campaign or mission calls for it.

7th Company: Scout Company. As with most fleet based chapters the Obsidian Phoenix's recruit from the various world that they pass by. Scout squads work to identify prime targets for the other companies to hit, while also sabotaging anti air defenses and enemy air fields so that the chapters dominance if assured and they can bring the full force of their strength to bare. Land speeder support tends to come from this chapter as well, where scouts get the first taste of what it means to be a true son of Sanquinius. With the ground flying past in a blur as they deliver death from above at high speed.

8th Company: Death Company: The Fate that many of the chapter consider worse than death. To die is the fate of all those who fight for the future of man. But a death on the battle field means glory and the chance to be reborn in the Emperors flame. Stronger and ready to fight the enemies of man once more. Clad in armor as black as thier namesake the death company is teleported directly into the thickest of fighting. Covered in ethereal hell fire and bearing the heaviest of weapons, so they may reap a bloody toll before dying on the battle field to be reborn from the ashes.

Their Father's Curse:
As with every chapter that is founded from the Blood Angels, the Obsidian Phoenix chapter shares the twin flaws within their geneseed. But because of the cruel fate that affects all those of the 21st founding, it has manifested in ways unimagined by those who originally sought to cure the descendants of the IXth legion. The chapter believes that at the core of each and every one of their souls is a flame. When channeled and honed this flame give them strength and courage and allows spurs them on to do the greatest of deeds in the Emperors name. But like with every flame, if fanned too much it might grow out of control, or even worse be snuffed out entirely. This is the curse maid manifest. It is the flames of their soul at its strongest and at its weakest.

The Inferno:
"Be Wary, for while the flames that fuel our souls can be tapped to increase our strength and bring doom to our foes. These very flames can also consume us, scorching us and leaving nothing more than a barren husk." Fire Keeper Orus warning to a group of initiates.

As with many of the 21st founding much is not as it seems with the Obsidian Phoenix's. The Red thirst is in a way controlled, but at much cost. At the hieght of battle when a marine needs it most he can tap into the blazing inferno that resides in his soul, fueling his strength and allowing him to achieve feats of glory when all hope would be lost other wise. But this same flame will burn them away from inside. Literally eating away at their soul and life force. And should one reach too deeply or loose control for even an instant, the flames will run wild. Turning the marine into a reavant of flames and hate until the battle is done and once the last drop of enemy blood has been spilled the flames are snuffed out, leaving nothing but a husk within ash covered armor. With such an act being a danger to the longevity of the chapter both from the loss of vital geneseed, and from increased attention from the Inquisition the more such stories arise. This act is frowned upon and great strides have been made to suppress the urge of drawing upon such power.

To counter the threat of the Inferno, the chapter uses war songs to help keep their minds and souls clear during the heat of battle. Similar to others chapters litanies or prays during battle, they seem to take on a more personal meaning to those who sing them. While the songs can range from stories of glory and honor to wishes of a glorious death in battle so that they may fight by the emperors side. The most common and well known of these war songs tells of the life and death of Sanginius, and how he will one day rise from death to lead his chosen sons in a war of retribution against the traitors. To those around them these songs sound joyful yet melancholic and have the ability to inspire allies and unnerve enemies as images of death, devastation, glory and rebirth seem to seep into their very souls. While these songs are powerful in its intended effect, most marines will carry a vial of specially made drugs with them. Suppressants meant to calm them and keep the flames within from growing to strong. The cockpits of the chapters air craft have a system that specifically monitors its pilots aggression and stress and administers said drugs so not to cause the pilot to succumb to the inferno within.

The Ashes of Death:
"The only option for those husks is to die in battle. For the Emperor has no mercy for those who have commented such dishonor" High Chaplain Altric in reference to a group being armored in the color of darkest obsidian.

The ultimate dishonor is to loose ones self to to the raging inferno. To let the flames of their own soul consume them in rage and hate. As much as the loss of an able bodied marine and his gene seed in such a tragic manner would cause sorrow to any chapter. It is what comes after that causes them horror. The left over husk, once a noble warrior of the Emperor, is now a mindless being of sorrow and rage. Reanimated by the curse they rise. Eldritch strength allowing them to move with frighting speed within their now powerless armor. As the realization of their fate as the cursed undead they are driven insane. They have lost, the chance to be by the side of the Emperor and Sanginius when they rise once more to do battle on the enemies of man. For their soul is lost, never to return to the flames of rebirth. These husks are then gathered up as soon as possible, a difficult task as they are violent towards anything that moves. The beliefs of the chapters makes it where there is no mercy for these husks, death in combat is the only way for them to regain any shred of honor left. With a combination of drugs and recorded warsongs transmitted at all times through their helmets, the husks are re armed and re armored and put into stasis until they are needed, where they will be teleported straight into the midst of the enemy. Where they only have one mission. Become death incarnate to regain their chance at rebirth and salvage their honor as they are fated to die. They are given one final solution if by some cruel twist of fate allows the death company to survive even against such odds. A melta bomb attached to the husks body. If the husk realizes the enemy will not be enough to end his torment he can activate it, leaving nothing left. Ensuring that no evidence of such dishonor will ever remain for their enemies to use.

Even with the Chapter vigilance there are tales of warzones where hulking beings in armor of obsidian black wander. Slaying all that go to near before moving on, howling in despair and cursing their fate. Every time a tale as such reaches the chapters ears they will send out an execution squad to end its torment.

I am also looking forward to seeing more told about the Obsidian Phoenix - I really like the idea of the color scheme - although I personally always have a hard time with Purple.

Updated. Added more info about the various companies and fixed the images. Still working out how exactly to describe the curse. Comments and Critique welcome as always.

Good evening

Your chapter looks nice, I like the idea of having the curse focusing on the flame thingy, more than on the typical bloodthirsty psychos thing.

Anyway, I'll be happy to read more about your chapter, because it definitely looks promising! :)

Good luck with all of that :)
