ok, i admit i have not read a single book about the 40k universe and history (besides my Tau codex). I am fastly becoming interested in doing so.

My question is which book should i start with, and what is the next one, and the next, ... and so on.

You must start with the famed Horus Heresy books.

The first one is Horus Rising, the next in the series is False Gods.

If you dont wanna start there, try the Gaunt's Ghosts series, the first one being First and Only, and the second being Ghostmaker.

But most all Black Library books are amazing, expect for a few like anything by C.S. Goto. :x

Somewhere theres a comprehensive but still fairly short timeline.

good Sci-fi
Oxymoron?

I've heard the Ciaphas Cain books are fun.

Don't read the Deathwatch books.

if you can, pick up the old Space Marine codices and rulebooks. Old supplements are the best source for all-round fluff. 2nd Ed Codex Imperialis is a bible.

If you want specifics, read the novels.

tor! How dare you! Good sci-fi an oxymoron?

No, its just so many people think they can do it right they try and fail miserably, andthats all people see.

But yeah, check out the old supplications, they're great!

And oh--the Ciaphas Cain novels are surpisingly wonderful!
