Ok guy's a quick Q (this goes out especially to the GT players)

In a competative Tau Mech army, how stupid are Pathfinders? I really like them and i do use seeker missiles a lot ( including a Skyray). So what do you think?

Yae nor nae!

I'll post the list later.

The benefit of Pathfinders is when they markerlight a dedicated assault unit that's fast moving (like a Space Marine assault squad, for example) then have another unit shoot so they kill a model. One markerlight hit goes towards making them take a pin check (unless you shot them with carbines, in which case that's fine) and the rest go towards lowering their leadership for said pin check. That buys you another turn of shooting and means that there are a lot fewer models hitting you in close combat, if any.

Their 'fish can also be used as a decoy-- remember, they don't have to deploy in it. Have it tag along with a pair of 'fish packed full of Fire Warriors. The other guy won't know which one's the pathfinders', so there's a one in three chance he'll shoot the empty one.

Personally I dislike them. They are a costly unit that is heavily targetted and wiped out all too quickly. If you could take them without the Fish I might be more generous about them but to my mind they are useless. I run a hybrid Tau army and I put 2 marker drones in the 2 foot squads I have. Lets me target 2 different enemy units and isn't putting all my eggs in one basket. Also far hard for the enemy to get rid of the drones as they are surrounded by 12 fw's.

So short answer: nay

Go with Tetras if you want good mobile markerlight support

You can probably mod up a couple piranhas

Myself, I like a mix, some mobile, some static. Sniper Drone teams are a fun way to put in markerlights, as well as some nasty rail rifles.

Give the Stealth Markerlight Team (SMT) a try!

Take a team of 3 Stealths, with a Team Leader. Give each a Drone Controller and 2 Marker Drones. Then give the Team Leader a Hard Wired Target Lock and a Markerlight of his own. Then plonk them down 36 inches away and light things up. You can even move them in the assault phase if things get a little bit too close for comfort. The enemy'll never be able to do a thing about them.

Markerlights are a very bad idea in a stealth team. They need to be mobile, and having them stay back means you;re wasting the burst cannons you've already paid for.

Plus, marker drones are expensive as hell. You're going to end up with an insanely expensive unit that have, basically, less functionality than the Pathfinders.

The whole reason pathfinders are bad is because it concentrates all your markelrights into a single unit. Meanwhile, this is doing the exact same thing, but with more cost and no option for rail rifles or a light tank.

Galahad is spot on here, Stealths and lights do NOT mix. The best ways to get lights in the army, imho of course, are drones in fw teams, sniper drones, and the skyray.

So, what you are telling me is that you're better off getting your markerlight hits from troops with a 4+ save and only a single markerlight shot, or from a large target that has to expose itself to incoming fire to get off shots? Seriously, a Stealth team can light things up with 7 potential markerlight hits per turn, can be infiltrated to put the markerlights exatly where you want before the game begins and is almost immune to return fire. Combine this with the fact that they have a 3+ save, can fire markerlights and jump away if the enemy is getting too close and can put Markerlights where you want them on turn one and you've got a great marker unit.

Now, I personally use a Pathfinder team to provide markerlight and Rail Rifle support. This is mainly due to their attached devilfish (I use Devilfish as main battle tanks, drives my opponents mad) but it also puts AP3 on target and can augment my army. But don't count Pathfinders out, and don't discount a Stealth Marker Team either. They may be a little expensive, but few things have the survivability, and if you are in desperate need for Markerlights, they're just what you need.
