Think Wil e. Coyote. tall natural stone pillars are good. blocks LOS can be flat on top for jump troops and they are easily moved around without slowing troops down. put a couple sand dunes on either side and a line of these down the center and instant ravine.
natural arches, stone pillers. Maybe some wrecked tau tanks ya know, from failed scout missons.
Or if you're up to it, a tau helmet in the sand and footprints walking away from it?
Maybe even a canyon, with rope bridges or just badly rusted collapsing bridges.
You don't actually have to make it to height scale, just keep the ravine black or paint a far-down-view backdrop.
A mate of mine works in a surfboard workshop. He gives me the foam spill (they're roughly conical mounds about two foot high). With a bit of trimming and shoving, I made a canyon wall (Impassable terrain) for a previous club.
I've also got other friends who play wargods, and they have an egyptian themed desert canyon table.
Never (no matter what terrain) stray from rocks/cliffsides, they work nearly anywhere if I simple change of colour scheme, are fairly easy to make, and usually look good no matter how simple
