One of my mates play tau and just to clear up further arguments I need this question answered:

Can fire warriors rapid fire at 30"
I mean, can they get both shots at 30" when every one gets two shot at 12"

Cheers, Kapeesh

The rules for Rapid Fire are 1 shot at maximum range or 2 shots at 12". If you move you may only shoot the 2 shots at 12" unless you count as stationary (Terminators, anything with slow and purposefull, Tau Battlesuits, Monstrous Creatures.. etc.etc..)

If you move you *only* get to fire 2 shots at 12", if you stay stationary you have your choice of 1 at max range or 2 at 12"

That;s what makes Tau 'Fish of Fury' tactics so lethal

Well i'm new but have been playing the other way.
affects mainly my conscripts. Since they tend to charge forward to look scarry(and tend to draw a lot of fire)

And because its vaguely related but often missed...

You cant shoot once under 12" even if you remained stationary (normally not important but for those 'gets hot' weapons it matters).

I don't see why you couldn't decide to just fire once.
The rules say you CAN fire twice at targets up to 12" away, it never says you MUST

Nah its stupid but thats the rule. Rapid fire can shoot twice at targets up to 12" away or once over 12" and up to maximum range if it doesnt move. It doesnt say you can shoot once or twice up to 12" only that you can choose to shoot twice or not at all.

I could be persuaded otherwise though if anyone has a compelling argument against it. My plasma-guardsmen hate that stupid rule.

It says "Can" it does not say "Must"

I really don't see how you see that it forces you to fire twice. It says you can, which means you don't have to. List like how the force weapon says you 'may' use its special ability, not that you must.

There's no reason within the rules why your guardsmen can't use some basic trigger discipline.

Tell me where it says you *must* fire twice.

Uh... I didnt say you must fire twice. I said you can fire twice.

It still doesnt say you can fire once though.

I'm not sure what you;re getting at.

The rules don't require you to fire the maximum amount of shots allowed

If the rules required you to fire twice within 12" it would say MUST as opposed to can. The fact that it says CAN means that you may choose to fire once or twice within 12" plain and simple. It does not have to say you can fire once as it has already given you the choice.

BGB FAQ Errata said:
Q. When a stationary firing unit targets an enemy unit
and only some of the firing unit’s rapid fire weapons fall
in the 12" range, what happens?
A. Solve them separately, as above. All firing models
within 12" fire two shots (these shots can only hit
members of the target unit within 12"). The firing models
outside 12" fire a single shot (these can hit all members
of the target unit within 24").
All firing models within 12" fire two shots. No choice in the matter. Besides Im pretty sure that the devs cleared this up at some point in time in WD somewhere. The way I look at it is that I may shoot once to the maximum range or I can rapid fire (hence my weapon being called a Rapid Fire weapon).

I believe in that Q/A, they are assuming you wish to shoot as much as possible, and RF with the close units.

I would imagine the player could choose not to RF and and fire all shots max range. (and fire less overal shots)

Though that is not stated in the FAQ.
