I just bought a load of Orks as a Job lot which included an unused Stompa. In that Job lot I had loads of goodies and I'm very happy with what I picked up, but I am in two minds about whether or not to unbox, and build the Stompa.
I am wondering if it will get much use, and whether or not I maybe better off selling it and making a bit back on my job lot.
It's a LOT of points, as a Lord of War, and my local Game Club and GW does have members who arrive with IK's on an intermittent basis. How does a Stompa stack up against such opposition. I know there are all sorts of ways to beef up survivibility with grot riggers and hordes of Meks, and the 20 boy transport capacity in such a beast is very tempting, but does anyone play one regularly?
I tend to play between 1000-2000 point games, and bringing something like this would just seem ridiculously cheesy at that level.
Any thoughts?

I personally would sell/trade it for more orks. Especially with the points level of your typical game. To tool it out like you said for survivability, the majority of your army would be in it.

At 2000 pts a lonely stompa can easily be snuffed. considering that if you want him beefed up, you are now talking about a 900 pts model, plus a 20 nobz or lootas inside...even if boyz, you are looking at minimum 950-1000 pts. The rest of the army is too sparse and uneffective at 1000 pts to protect him. With 2000 pts a well focused army can soften it with shooting and then assault with specialists. You can be a deuchebag and bring one at 1000 pts, barebones, plus a bigmek and scores of grots... i'd be more worried at facing 3 battlewagons full of meganobz and boyz

They are good for games that are 2500 points or more otherwise they are to easy for other armies to wear down. I would keep it they are fun to have. I have been trying to get my hands on one so I can put working speaks and an ipod inside it to play orky tunes while I battle.

@R_Squared I think you're best options are:

1- keep it and paint it as a centerpiece/ display piece. If the job-lot wasn't too expensive it might be a fun project if you're up to the task.

2- sell it to Morfangdakka, because that's an amazing idea.

3- check out the second hand market for stompas. Check eBay and bits sites and see what the going rates are. It might not be worth selling based on going rates and shipping.

Also @morfangdakka you're options are battery operated mini-speakers and a cheap mp3 player or wireless speakers (perhaps Bluetooth) and a smartphone with Bluetooth.

That would be badass!

I like the MP3 player idea, and I know the perfect soundtrack....

BoltThrower

I had that album when it came out.
I've still got quite a bit of work to do on my army, loads of stuff still needs doing, and I did pick this up for a very good price, so I'm not in any rush to get rid. Hopefully by the time that I am ready to assemble and paint this, I will be in a position to play some larger games, and it would be appropriate to get this involved.
The stat line is pretty impressive, 12 Hull points, and invincible Behemoth turning explode results into d3 HP instead, means that it can absorb a huge amount of firepower, and it can also dish it out.
With grot riggers, meks and KFF you have a bullet magnet that can shrug off almost an entire armies worth of dakka, allowing boyz to get amongst it. The possibilities are just too tempting.
I think I'll keep it.

I was going to go with 4-6 battery operated but the wireless speaker and smartphone would work since I already have the smartphone and I know where to get the wireless speakers. I am going to try to convert the stompa to make it look like it is playing a guitar shaped like a battle axe. Now just gotta get that stompa but need to finish the rest of my army first.

It's one of the few things that allows Orks to be competitive with an all-comers list to face against Knights without being limited to spamming Tankbustaz, which are even less capable against all comers.

True to a degree. Tank bustas are not that bad versus all comers since they changed the tank hammer rule. A few tankhammers in a tankbusta squad now make them good in CC. Also rokkit spam is good, rokkit buggies, deffkoptas and such. Weirdboyz seem to be the best at taking out Knights and they are decent in all comers plus they are not a big target like a stompa.

When you do get to use the stompa, run kustom with kastrel novem stats, the belly gun has a 3d6 range, and a successful stomp is really satisfying. No armour saves of any kind, and you get D3 of them. It really pisses people off when 3 small blast templates just go away!
