hey everyone *waves*

its been awhile since i posted on here :(

now ive gone through so many different armies trying to get the right play style for me these include

tau
orks
necrons
nids
sisters of battle
imperial guard

and non of them captured me by there play style so i had a break from 40k for awhile and now i think i wanna try the chaos space marines
mainly because i really like the character Typhus and the playstyle of chaos can be very diverse so i think going for them

however

i hear they are getting updated next year and i wondered if its a good idea to start them now or would it be a good idea to wait for the update?

oh and any tips for the best way to start chaos and what units to use etc

thanks :D!

Well unfortunately the playstyle of CSM is not diverse in the slightest.

You need:
2 x Tzneetch DPs with Wings, Warptime and Wind of Chaos
2-5 x Plague marine squads in Rhinos with Meltaguns/Plasmaguns
1-2 x Berzerker squads in Rhinos with A skull champion with a power fist
9 x Obliterators.

There you go.

Edit: Forgot wings. Silly me.

That basically is the most competitive force chaos can muster these days. And there are some rumours going round that chaos legions will be focusing more on uni-god lists... so it might become obsolete, it might not.

Don't let that scare you though. If you are into the hobby aspect, the rules will mean little to you and you just go with the models you think are prettiest. If you go for typhus and his boys, at least plague marines are still a decent enough troop choice, so going for a nurgle force makes sense.

It's always annoying to have to wait for a new codex, especialy when you know one will be just around the corner. But if you like the models, you'll still like them a year from now I reckon... I'd say go for it, paint some stuff up. This is coming from somebody who is more of a hobby-ist first and a gamer second though.

If you are solely in it for the gaming, it might be better to be patient for a year and wait and see.

competitively CSM have 1 build/variations of that build. but who cares it CHAOS MOTHER F*CKING SPACE MARINES. we are the BADASSES of the 40k universe.

also we have one of the most complete model lines in the hobby while at the same time some the most unique and cool looking models (possessed, termies, defiler) and kickass HQs + special characters.

trust me you will love playing CSM. besides you might as well join the asylum before they get their new codex and EVERYONE joins.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: try to find another army you like and wait 'till Chaos gets their new Codex. I used to play CSM, they were shit back before the Blood Angels came out (that was when I sold my army), and the more new armies get an update the worse it gets. Then again, if you're playing in a sandbox with other non-5thed codices you'll have a good time, they're balanced compared to each other (at least I always enjoyed playing against Orks and Tau). Depends on your LGS. Myself I'm trying to build a Necron army because their new fluff is awesome and wait and see what the new codex will have to offer.

Otherwise what elmir and Orochi said, word by word.

Well I started because I thought the background to Chaos Space Marines was simply mind-blowing, well that and I like Chaos Dreadnaughts. If you want to start my advice is this: Bugger playing competitively, you'll only become dissapointed. Go with some of the crazier elements and you'll have more fun.

Why not play chaos necrons?....nah I am just kidding although I would suggest waiting if you are on a time and money budget as the last ....update..... crippled or made none existent at least 3-4 different chaos armies so watch out. After all basilisks and cultists were not cheap models.

Well, the Necron Codex had a few discoloured Gauss weapons, blue being one I've seen... Thoth Dynasty, it was called... obvious Tzeentchians much? :)

I say go for it. If you have the funds and the time then you may as well start collecting them, take your time, do an awesome paint job, and by the time you have a sizeable army the new 'dex may be out and you'll be set to go. It isn't as though the book will change that much that you'll lose units, they'll just have different rules.

I've been playing nothing but outdated armies: Black Templar (main), Tau, and Orks. It's difficult to win games but I still enjoy playing them knowing that I will be getting an update and will have all the pieces I need to hit the ground running.

You have got to be carefull with this statement though. It wouldn't be the first time that GW decides that miniature X shouldn't got with miniature Y anymore.

Recent example is the new grey knight codex. Other then the basic grey knights, most of the models I owned got outright removed from the codex or can only be used with a special character like coteaz (and I'm not too fond of using SCs) at a pinch.

I had to set aside almost all of my inducted imperial guard units because of that new codex, meaning I had to start from scratch again and all those painted models are now just sitting there on the shelf. Same deal with a friend of mine and her sisters of battle. Her landraider, inquisitor and her fighty retinue has been scrapped altogether. That really pissed her off, because that landraider was decked out in all forgeworld parts and was over €100 total in parts.

That's exactly why I wouldn't go too crazy on chaos right now. If you find a single god you like, it's probably a "safer bet" because at least those models will still be able to be fielded together when the new codex arrives. GW won't scrap the models alltogether... but it might decide that they are part of a different army soon (or make undivided armies the weaksauce option for instance).

Chaos is pretty simple to play since we don't have many combat tricks but as others have said if you need to win to have fun chaos isn't for you , and if things do change with the new codex you can always simple green the army and repaint.

That said I can't see myself playing any other race as besides daemons you pretty much have complete freedom to paint things or convert things how you want and use so many different models and colours in your army (Just google Demon princes alone for ideas).

In my opinion ignore anyone that says "no" to starting chaos marines, why because there fun for gaming (if your not bothered about been overly competitive) some of the best fluff, great to model and convert and down right visually interesting.

Dont worry to much about the next edition codex for them, I somehow doubt any units that are in the codex now will be removed, considering whats in it now is virtually bare bone anyway, its more then likely new units will be added then current removed and iv got more reason to worry about units been removed when iv invested alot to get 10k worth of them.

So in other words, if you like them go straight ahead.
