Hi, I am looking to get into Warhammer 40K. I would like to know what starter army I should start with. there are a couple that have caught my eye already (List is Space Marines, Chaos, Tau, Necrons, and Imperial Guard.) I would like your guy's opinions on what army I would should start out with.

My advice, pick the set you like the looks of. With the Unbound and Ally aspects of the current ruleset you can mix and match army choices to support any issues you first choice has. Look at the models in each line and find the set that appeals to you the most looks wise.

unforuntaley this is not for us to answer...many people will blindly tell you to play x over y cause y is better etc this IS The worst passable way to enter this hobby..as it will be based solely on rules...

you and only you can select the army that fits you...and that will start with the models that you like...

go to a local club and watch a few games being played to see the armies in action that will help you choice of game play...but untlimatly it comes down to your like/dislike
you are the one that must buy build and paint..so get the models you like.

as for my opinion...with 7th ed you are pretty safe to get any models these days as they can all pretty much allie etc...so dont be afraid..jump right in and get collectin

its like the question i used to get asked when i worked for game stop "which is better XBox of Playstation, and which should i get?" best answer....look at what they have, pick what you like. I went with chaos because of the look of the terminators and some of the vehicles.... that and im one of two chaos space marine players so i dont have to worry about people buying stuff i need

Space marines and necrons are two fairly forgiving armies with lower mldel counts and nice scope to devlop tactical ploys. The IG are awesome (biased) but you will need to shell out more cash to play; also, you need to be prepared for attrition warfare with IG. Chaos was my first army, they are similar to space marines with somewhat less flexibility and more chaotic goodness. Tau i don't see much of sorry.

If you would like to know more, i recommend watching the batreps on Heresy Online, miniwargaming.com and striking scorpion on youtube, as well as reading lexicanum and 1d4chan. Have fun!

Like many have already said it is up to you. I always tell people to look at the models that they like, the lore of the army that appeals to you the most because you are probably going to be spending more time putting together and painting the army than playing it to start off with and when you like the army and the models it makes you want to put them together and paint them.
