CC please. So far I am 0-1 but I learned a lot and I deployed like total crap. I think I can do better. Let's see if you agree.

if you're satisfied with this build, run with it, but the biggest issue i see: only 3 scoring units for a total of 15 models.

did that factor in your last game?

the first game with this list, or actually a small variation due to the points being 2500 instead of 2000, was a kill point game. I got slaughtered on kill points. But a large part of that had to do with a tremendous number of crappy rolls on the Vehicle damage chart for a number of enemy AV. I know that is the game but you understand how the score does not always reflect the potential of a list.

I don't mind having only three scoring units. This list is not intended to babysit objectives. I'd rather blow the opponent to smitherines and lose then win by objectives.

The points are really tight as the unit choices in this list are pretty min/maxed but does anyone think points should be going elsewhere? I would drop one of the long fangs but they are so versatile that more really is better don't you think.

Didn't even see that, thanks for pointing it out. You need to figure out what you want to do with this list. Logan should only be used if you are doing a Logan wing and if you want a hammer unit, which I wouldn't advice, go with twc.

Logan is pricey but amazing! And due to army theme reasons TWC is not really an option unless I ran counts as bikes which I imagine would cause some opponents to be super pissed since there is already an entry for bikes in the SW dex.

Seriously though, read carefully all that Logan can do. He effen rocks.

Looks similar in function to this list - I just incorporate my hammer unit into my troops (but then so do you with Logan)

  • Rune Priest, 7 Grey Hunters (Melta and Power Weapon), Wolf Guard (melta bombs and Powerweapon) in a Rhino with PMSB

  • Long Fang Pack – 5 Missile Launchers, Squad Leader in Razorback with TL Lascannon
  • 5 Grey Hunters (Flamer) in Razorback with TL Lascannon
  • 5 Wolf Scouts (meltagun and melta bombs)
  • Land Speeder Typhoon (ML and Melta)
  • Land Speeder Typhoon (ML and Melta)

I think Logan + Arjac + 2 Rune Priests is a bit on the expensive side, but it's effectively a rock list with good support.

The only concern I would have is pretty much the same as Inquisitor Malaclypse -- Really light on scoring units. Also, I'm not wild about the speeders... I think they're better as Typhoon/MM... but I think I'm at odds vs the internet on that one...

@ CLT40K: What is your strategy with Typhoon/MM? Right now I usually use the speeders as an alpha strike and target anything that can take out the LR. Are the Typh/MM speeders just versatile? They seem expensive to lose were you to use them the way I use mine.

Oh and I would like to add that the biggest surprise, to me at least, with regard to my list is how sick Rune Priests are in CC. For the 2500 pt game I gave them runic armor and watched as he and the small unit of GHs tarpitted 10 BA assault troops for two full game turns!

I thought about scrapping the third Long Fangs Squad while adding a fifth ML to the two remaining squads. I would save 65 points and lose two MLs. My buddy said to keep it as is because the chance to kill six units is far better than having a slightly more effective chance at killing four. I see his point but with 68 (65 saved+3 remaining already) points I could fill out my GHs a bit and add some worthwhile wargear to my Rune Priests.

I tend to use the speeders as long range fire support, blocking and LR suicide runs. The HF is cool and lots of folks use them... but you have to get right up on your opponent to shoot it, and if I'm running a really shooty list, I tend to castle up.... so if I run them HF/MM then I may not get a chance to use them. But by taking them MM/ML they can stand back and shoot as well... So from a flat firepower perspective, they're prefereable to me.

For the LF, I think the decision should be made based off of how you intend to play the GH... I tend to keep the squads cheap and rely on assaulting multiple units if I have to get them into play (ie, vs TermieHammer) Personally, I pretty much always err on the side of more firepower, so I would be more inclined to take the LF.

OK game 2 under my belt and unfortunately with more horrendous rolling came a second loss. (look, I mean one of those games where both players are laughing at one's misfortune). But I learned something again. This list absolutely cannot rely on 3 MM/HF speeders and Arjac to take out AV 14. My LR carrying the Termis was immobilised in turn one by a lascannon shot and the MM missed time and again at near point blank range. SO, I am now thinking about dropping one Long Fang squad and add two more MM/HF speeders and a pintle-mounted MM on the LR. This should give me more than enough MMs to take out any mechanized force while keeping the anti-horde potential.

My wargaming consigliere adamantly advises against any changes. He acknowledges the recent misfortune but believes my strategy is the larger problem. It is his belief that targeting AV 14 is less of a priority then I make it. Since I have no money to buy new units the list will stay as is and play tested some more until such time when I can better discern the list's efficacy.

I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but I have a quick question as im looking into starting space wolves and seeing this in every thread its hard to tell/understand what it is. What does TWC mean?

As for my advice on the list. Would it be better to add the Land Speeder into one of the other groups so it's not a lone/easy kill point?

TWC= Thunder Wolf Cavalry

Land Speeders are actually less resilient when in squadrons. Also any more than 3 speeders must in squadrons due to FOC limitations.

OK, so I have been playing this list a lot lately and I AM having some success. As this is a balanced army I have been doing fine against other take-all-comers, more casual, lists. However, AV13/14 spam is still the bane of my existence. So, in an effort to squeeze more melta here is what I am doing (at least for a try).

HQ:
Logan (attach to Long Fangs unit Gamma)
Rune Priest (storm caller/living lightning) (attach to Grey Hunter unit Alpha)
Rune Priest (storm caller/murderous hurricane) (attach to Grey Hunter unit Beta)

Got to talking on Dakka and it was suggested that I simply upgrade one unit of Fangs to Lascannons and stick Logan with them for tank hunters. I think this idea is far better than drop podding him in. So scrap the above.
