Hello;

I'm working on building a 2000 point IG list based on the ORBAT of a theoretical forward element of a 70s/80s Soviet Combined Arms Battle Group. The list is as follows:

Basic Company Command Squad + vox 1x
Basic Platoon Command Squad + vox 1x
Veteran squad with 3x melta + vox x4
Chimera x4
Valkyrie x1
Ratlings x5
Leman Russ Battle Tank x4
Basilisk x2
Hydra x2

2000 points total

I understand that this may not be a particularly effective army as I've tried to get it as close to doctrinally accurate as possible, so I'd love some feedback to make them more effective. I'd like to stay as close to the Soviet Combine Arms vanguard as possible, but I'm also flexible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I like it, the Soviet doctrinal set up suits a guard army really well, personally I would try to fit in more armour be it tanks or transports maybe ditch two of the valkries to do it but that's just me , enjoy gaming with it

One problem: From the astra militarum codex, you have to take the infantry platoon when taking the platoon command squad.

So does removing the Platoon Command Squad fix the issue, or does it create some other problem?
Thanks for the response!

"maybe ditch two of the valkries to do it"
Oops, I had meant to include only 1x Valkyrie, not 4x! Although that would be fantastic!

It fixes the issue, you dont need the platoon formation to run vet squads and now that you've freed up some points maybe give out some upgrades? Also another thing if you are running a vet squad in chimeras you're going to learn fairly quickly you will want to keep them in those chimeras during the game. unfortunately what this means is orders now become completely useless because you cannot give an order to an embarked unit. Read the codex for that. So... you could drop all your voxes and maybe just bump up that CCS with a Lascannon and MoO for fire support? I think even the Red Army had forward observers...

Thanks for the advice! Getting rid of the Platoon Command Squad and the Vox Casters will open up some points. I'll look do some reading on the MoO, but at a glance it looks like he'd be a great use of 20 points. Do you feel this would be an effective Guard army? I've never fielded a force this big and don't really know if this army could be an effective game winner. Thanks for again for all the help!

Yes, this list can do very well, between the melta vets and leman russ battle tanks you have enough to deal with most comers.

Although, I should say that I don't think that the Soviets had melta weaponry, wasn't it an RPK light machine gun, dragunov and RPG per squad? (not that you can really represent that light machine gun)...

Terrific! Hahaha, you're right, it's not a perfect imitation by any means! I think it would be fun to get into a table top game where you could perfectly replicate the Soviets, but I really love the lore of the 40k Universe. Thanks for all of your help, greatly appreciated!
