I've only recently started playing at a LGS of mine and when i play at home with my friends we talk smack. Lots of it. Is this common place in the 40k community? I tried to be polite but after being shot at for 4 straight turns by eldar, having him back up a skimmer full of melta guns to my armor, hop out and try to pop them. i could barely contain myself when i unloaded two rhinos full of zerkers and a LR full of Khorne Terminator champs next to his objective and proceeded to tear his little aliens apart. Is trash talking acceptable? do people take it in good nature? Or is it considered an asshole move? Just curious so i don't become a despised member of the LGS.

I think it's one of those things that are fine with your friends. They know you, they know you're not being a jerk. They know they can fire back and it's all in good fun.

On the other hand, if you're playing a pickup game against someone you don't know then smack talking them might cause trouble. How do they know you're just kidding? How do they know you're not just a jerk? They don't.

My advice: Err on the side of caution.

Personally, my gaming club has a sort of unwritten rule that smack talk before the game is acceptable, smack talk during the game is avoided.

I think anyone mature enough to be playing this game properly will be fine with a certain amount, just be sure not to rub it in their faces, especially when you win; at the apex of the game is fine, but not once it's started sloping towards you; it's even more acceptable if you're losing, it shows you're just having fun :D

And keep in mind, trash talk becomes HILARIOUS when your unit of Berzerkers gets slaughtered by Guardians

*edit*
I think I may be misinterpreted smack-talk.
What I was thinking of was going like "Fuuuuuuuuuck yeah!" and stuff when awesome things are happening.
Like aforementioned Berzerkers hopping out, and you go "Bend over boy!".

Well your interpretation isn't far off. I held back smack talking after i heard him for 15 minutes before our game talking to a friend on his cell phone saying that he's playing CSM and he will have no problem taking care of the table... blah blah blah... and first turn i blow up both his fire prisms with some lucky rolls. Is it acceptable to rub in sore wounds like that? like the next turn saying something along the lines of "awe man i bet you wish you had those fire prisms about now..." and so forth..

I think a simple mention of "No problem cleaning the table, aye?" is sufficient, they'll feel quite the fool.

I think smack talk is most of the fun in any compettitive activity. I hate playing a game against someone who just sits there and takes it, stopping only to say "I'm moving my squad 6 inches." Give me a smack talker any day.

Ultimately it depends on your opponent. If they look like they're having fun, go ahead I say. Keep in mind though, its a two way street. If you're going to do it, expect it back.

smack talk in good spirit of the game is fine and good.
smack talk because your an asshole with a superiority complex is bad.
what if you're an asshole who's talking smack in good spirit?

I'll think i'll take the see how the opponent takes it. I'm guessing a 20+ year old man is going to take it a bit better than a 13 year old boy. If you can't take it don't dish it out is a good saying i try to keep in mind. It's no fun talking smack if they aren't going to come back at you. At that point it just feels like bullying. I'll Let you all know how it works out. Maybe i'll make someone cry

Usually when i am playing against guys I know we talk smack all the time during the whole game. If it is someone I don't know or haven't played before, I don't say anything to them but playing orks I have my units talk smack to each other. This way I can still do the smack talk but it me talking to my boyz instead of my opponent.

Personaly i dont see the problem with Smack Talk with friends its spices up the game and its always satisfyign when you live up to your talk pregame and during :)

But when playing with absolute strangers, if you do and you fail you will look pathetic, if you do and you suceed you will come off as VERY arrogant. So you should only really do with with friends. At your LGS not at first but maybe when you get to know the people then you should try it :)

if your an asshole then nothing you say is ever in good spirit, because being an asshole takes priority before all else.
I'm getting the feeling that you have some serious assholes that you know. Or that assholes where you're from are a lot worse then the ones around here. That wasn't a serious comment i was just messing around. If i ever played you i'd make sure not to do any smack talking. It might get misconstrued.

General consensus seems to be that smack talking is best between friends except when you're really just talking to yourself or pretending to make your plastic figures talk to each other. Although i can see the fun in that i'm not the kind to make my figures talk to much.

Have you all been in any situations where smack talk has gone completely wrong and just backfired on the person doing it, or made them an outcast?

Stella, smack talking does not make me a jerk nor does it define who I am.

Being an arrogant jerk makes me a jerk.

Plus if somebody doesn't pick up on good natured jabbing and ripostes then they're generally a mouth breathing basement dweller with no self esteem. If you walk up to a table with tau, I'm going to refer to you as a "filthy fish person". If your guns miss and you play orks there might just be a "Lowly beasts don't even clean their weapons".

And of course if I miss a lascannon shot I'll call you a big cheaterface mceldrad limpwrist. Because obviously your tricksy elf ways are botching my dice. Jerk.

Unless you mean the real assholes who just have no social skills and take shit too seriously and cheat. I find that verbally assaulting them works extremely well.

As long as insults are kept strictly to my army and not concerning me I'm usually fine with anything that occurs to you. That said, if you laugh every time a squad of mine dies, or I miss an important shot, or my plan goes up in flames, then I am not going to play you again. Or, if I'm desperate I'll play you but I'll smack talk you until your ears are red.

smack talking little plastic men isn't nearly as fun as smack talking a person playing with little plastic men... I'd laugh if you missed an important shot at one of my guys. and i'd laugh my ass off if 1 of my guys survived 7 attacks and then turned around and wiped out your squad. And i'd welcome the spack talking the next game. You sound a bit touchy. I wouldn't personally insult your person but laugh at a humiliating squad loss or foiling a plan of an enemy. Those are things that are enjoyable and make me laugh. That's not really smack talking just enjoying a hobby.

As to the first part of your response I meant that I was fine with "in game" smack talk that concerned my army of choice. Further, I am fine until it becomes every thing that I do wrong elicits a laugh and everything you do correctly results in a victory dance.

After, spending an entire turn and every available gun in my and my ally's army shooting a squad of Lost and Damned marines, we face palmed, my opponents had a chuckle, and it was all good. However, if getting laughed at for every mistake quickly gets tiresome.

I teamed up with an imperial guard player, he spent the rest of the game accidentally dropping basilisk shells on my big squad of SUPER PISSED OFF black Templar. By the end of the game I had two dudes left in the squad, they had crawled across the entire board, up a building, and on the last turn threw two loyalist marines off the side in screaming hatred. I then proceeded to walk across the table and start yelling insults at my ally imperial guard player in the manner of a frenchman.

But yeah, if it's a tense, tense game and I somehow have one marine left from the five that went into combat with your super uber terminator squad and he manages to win combat due to bad dice, I'll politely decline shouting at your cowardly hulking terminators running away from one lucky dbag.
