So im 100% new to 40k . i played fantasy for a while but got bored of it. so im sittin here makin my army list (1500 point) and was wondering

If my hq is Marneus Calgar.. i was wanting to attach him to another unit and drop them from a drop pod. what unit would be a good choice for it? or is a drop pod a bad idea all together haha

Well what i was thinking was him with her termi armor attached to a group of honor guard. Then i can drop pod them in and let them cause chaos. But i guess the question i asked was better answered if i had a whole army list for you guys. once i finish it ill post it up

Calgar is a cool model, but he's really not that great on the tabletop, especially at 1500 points. You're paying a Land Raiders' worth of points (not including honor guard) to drop him and his honor guard buddies down first turn and they'll likely die wherever they land a never get that charge off.

I'd suggest a cheaper HQ such as a librarian or Vulcan.

Ya i can see what you mean. if he gets into close combat he can do some good but i see the issue of him not making it lol. sooo. Im probably going to move towards a chapter master. less points. sound like a better idea?

yeah, calgars not really all that great considering he's shitty in assault (for a god-expensive character) and doesn't really buff your army that much (yay he gives you combat tactics! wait wtf you already had that, point is if you lost an assault you should be running so havin the option to stay is nearly useless). So do what hyppo said, grab a libby (NZ & GoI) and your good to go. Also post your list up here, that way you canget advice before you spend $300 on it.

The chater masters are good cause of their orbital bombardament.
I'd personally get a chaplain if you want to cause close combat chaos, especially if you stick him with some assault termies! If you want some long ranged get 2 of those laser dudes that have strength 10 at 48inchs and stuff.

imo, its all about what squad you're tweaking with your awesome hq characters for us SM players. i go with a captain + command squad + rzb on my fast list and almost always have a terminator librarian + 5 assault termies in a LR. the librarian is a must if your club is psyker heavy. the hood can be very handy against nids and eldar or tz csm who rely on those powers as a corner of their strategy. and the librarian has very killy powers in smite, avenger and vortex. i've seen the chaplain jump pack plus assault work well but my assault marines have done me so wrong at the club lately, they are off my list. use the hq unit to boost your force and make plays.

but i recommend to go with a captain as much as you can because you get more bang on the table for your points. I5, A3 with all the tasty wps options rocks. my captain hasn't been scored on in a game in four weeks - 6 games. the librarian without terminator armor is a vulnerable bastard. and your chaplain can hang in from a couple of plasma or melta hits with his rosarius but again he's only got 2 wounds.

Yeah, I'd agree with what the others have said. I have only ever used him once in a 5th ed game. He's only good, imo, in apocalypse, in combination with the masters of the chapter. I think they really only made him good for that. Although in combat he's not that bad. I think its just the amount of points he costs!
