Hello, I have been playing the Warhammer 40k pc games since '09 and own the entire DoW and DoW2 series and their expansion packs, but don't play competitively. I am a fan of Dan Abnett and am working my way through his "Gaunt's Ghosts" series.

For now, I am simply looking for information on the tabletop games before I attempt to jump into those. Also, if anyone is willing to give me some pointers for DOW2, I won't say "no".

My favorite race always has been and likely always will be the Eldar if for no other reason than their sheer mobility. Teleporting stealthed bases and armies were way too much fun in Soulstorm. Runners up include sisters of battle and imperial guard. I never play chaos, and I can't seem to get the hang of Orks, no matter how strong people tell me they are.

As you may have guessed, I am a "filthy casual," so please go easy on me.

Hey mate!

Love gaunt's ghosts as well, have you read the Sandy Mitchell Caiphus Cain series?
Never heard of it. I'll add it to my prescribed list of readings right after Eisenhorn.

DOW 1 was my favourite game for a while, shame DOW2 had the windows live second access barrier, because that really put me off playing it.
Since they changed the matchmaking to Steam, DoW2 one has become a lot more playable. The one thing I don't like about it is how vision got changed. I can't see anything unless I spread my units apart, but can't seem to kill anything if they aren't grouped. I think I'll go back to DoW1 when the next Steam sale rolls around. It's that or find a new disk drive.

Have you tried the Ultimate Apocalypse and Tyranid mods for Soulstorm?

Eldar are a pretty nasty set of xenos, I'd really recommend getting your hands on the Path of the Eldar series and one of the Deathwatch Compilations which sees the Eldar manipulating space marines into being gladiators for a dark eldar games.
Nasty? Maybe. As my Pekiti Tirsia instructor says, "there is nothing more dangerous than a lack of information except misinformation." Part of why I like the Eldar so much.
Anything in particular you'd like advice towards?
Just some words of advice regarding jumping into the tabletop games (should I or should I not, ideas on team comps, etc.) In terms of the PC games... honestly I don't know. It wasn't until I watched a few DoW1 tournament games that I realized just how terrible I was in general. My matches rarely get beyond the level of "fastest base built wins" level (except against my brother who insists on quickstart). So, any and all advice beyond what's in the instruction manuals (especially concerning Eldar) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I have some friends who are into board games and used to play Warhammer 40k tabletop games, but I'm not sure if they still have their armies. I'll definitely keep an eye out for other Games Workshop stores. The one in my old neighborhood was kind of dead.
Oh we got a funny one here, I nearly wet myself after reading that part.

Anyway welcome to the forums I hope you have a lot of fun on here. As you can see we are kind of a little dirty on here. But we will keep an eye on you cause you Umies is a little tricky.
Orks... their stench fills the area.
