I'm on a noob question roll lately (and I thank all of you for your gracious help)

I have been looking to find the right army to build and I have been looking into the Raven Guard

(here's where the confession comes in)

I have a couple of reasons for liking them...
1) I suck at painting so a basically black guy is an attractive option to me
2) like I said before in other threads.. I'm a huge Baltimore Ravens fan so having an army named the Ravens, and I can work in some purple highlights and do the team colors thing.... :D

So that being said I have two questions

1) what are the pros and cons of the raven guard (do they play well)

2) what do I need to find all the info for building an army and fielding them

I don't play SM so I can't really help you on the whole tatics side. I'd guess thought that they play fairely normally being from the SM dex with just a couple of traits.

If you wanted you could create a second founding Chapter of them, include you team colours in that and then just play them as a straight Dex chapter.

For info on the Raven Guard try these sites:

Hope thats helps you.

Good choice of chapter by the way - like the salamaders they are very rarely ever touched.

i think Raven Guard specialise in hit and runs because their SPC Kaavan Shrike is a MONSTER killer with those rending claws

The Raven Guard are, in game terms, a very fast, albeit generally small, army that emphasizes jump packers, land speeders, and things like infiltrating scouts to get the job done instead of a more direct assault with Rhino-borne Tactical Squads or a firing line featuring Devastators. Effective use of cover makes the army deadly, since squads can close without taking too many shooting casualties and be bolstered by independent characters tagging along. This sounds awfully pompous, but it's true-- when I don't win the local RTT, it usually goes to the Raven Guard player.

I looked through my SM codex and saw the shrike character but did not see anything that shows me specific rules or traits for Raven Guard armies.

What can I use as a reference??

i got a 7000 point army raven guard soo lots of jump units tied to a solid fire base like preds and 1 dev squad if it help but a chaplin with jump pack is a must and a shrike with his wing is a must in filtrate them and you get into combat in the first turn:victory:

happy gaming

Hey Kujo,

Great that you're psyched about Raven Guard, check out the PM i sent you.

Anyway, most of the info you've received so far is correct, but a few things that are kinda off.

Firstly, while we prefer our forces to be mobile, we've always believed in Infantry over Armour, so even though we are a fast army, we use Assault marines and not so much landspeeders. We're also a sneaky army so we use scouts. Although, that doesn't mean that we won't have well placed Devastators and tacticals to provide support...

One thing we generally don't use however are Rhinos/preds basically tanks, because it goes against our combat doctrine. Too noisy, too frontal, too "Look at me i'm here!". One thing that most have not mentioned(or i missed) is that we use Drop pods. Sure our traits only allow us to use 3 drop pods, but we use Drop Pods and thunderhawks to deploy us right where we need to be.

We're all about covert warfare and surprise attacks to avoid frontal warfare, so our operations deal mainly with sabotage, hit and run raids, assassination, etc...

As for how we are played now, we use traits that are stated in the Codex.

Remember, the most important thing about Raven Guard, we're about Precision over Power, Brain over Brawn, Covert over Overt and it's because of this way of warfare we've been able to fight against greater numbers than our own and still defeat them.
