Katie summed it up nicely, and if you fall under any category other than WAAC'ers then you're fine, or even a mix of them works...it just depends on the setting/group you play in.
Me, I can field competitive lists, but seen as I also play a lot of Apoc and in Campaigns I also build lists are are faithful to background etc...and FUN is got from all of them.
Anyway, I find the FUN - side of the Hobby mainly comes more from the people in the game, not from the lists played.
