So, I haven't been playing since fifth edition (still ...) and haven't found an army build that I've liked that also was competitive ...

I also like lists made with a great deal of thought, and with good amounts of fluff backing them up. Thus I made this, and will be putting the fluff up for those interested when I finish (though the fluff is actually going to be a series of short stories about their battles for freedom).

-HQ-
Arch-Magos Wilhelm Wunter (Primaris Psyker - 70 pts)

Preceptor-Savant Orley Casile (Primaris Psyker - 70 pts)

-ELITE-
Cultist Sorcerers (Psyker Battle Squad - 110 pts)
-9 Psykers

Psyker Battle Squad - 110 pts
-9 Psykers

Psyker Battle Squad - 110 pts
-9 Psykers

-TROOPS-
(Infantry Platoon)
Platoon Command: 45 pts
-4x Sniper Rifle

Infantry Squad: 60
-Melta Gun

Infantry Squad: 60
-Melta Gun

Infantry Squad: 60
-Melta Gun

Infantry Squad: 60
-Melta Gun

-Heavy Support-
Leman Russ Squadron (2): 370 pts
-Hvy Bolter Sponsons
-Extra Armor

Leman Russ Squadron (1): 185 pts
-Hvy Bolter Sponsons
-Extra Armor

Leman Russ Squadron (1): 185 pts
-Hvy Bolter Sponsons
-Extra Armor

Total - 1495

I'd like all thoughts and suggestions. Before posting know the two Primary Psykers and their psyker followers are NOT going to be changed, no matter how effective/ineffective they turn out to be.

You only have 1 Troop choice..if taking just Platoons you need at least 2 PCS and 2 Infantry Squads to form a legal list, so you're missing 1 PCS.

I suggest dropping all the EA as it does little of value overall, plus the points are best spent elsewhere...more weapons usually.

I wouldn't bother squadroning any Russes at this points level..you can use those points on that 2nd PCS and maybe some HWT's etc.

Right. I feel like a failure now, missing something as obvious as that. Anyway, Do you really think I need another Platoon? Could just a squad of vets or maybe a penal legion unit work?

If I was to take another platoon how would you equip it? I was thinking flamers all round, though that would make all their special weapons close range.

If I don't squadron two russes than I can only take three, instead of four though, and I am counting on tanks and psyker battle squads to kill meqs and other vehicles/monstrous creatures. I guess if I took out the tank and the extra armor on all of them I could take another platoon with heavy weapons or something ...

How effective have you guys (as a community) found the Primaris and Squad psykers to be?

you could fix the problem by just dropping the extra armour and adding another sniper command squad and making it two platoons of two squads.

Lose one Leman from the 2-tank squadron, add a flamer PCS and an Autocannon HWS. That leaves you with enough free points to add either another HWS, or get a Chimera for a PBS.

Don't beat yourself up about it, and yes your 2nd Troop choice can be any choice you want..Vets or PL's will work. Personally, I feel you'd be better off taking Ratlings as the way of getting Snipers into your list, and swapping the PCS's weapons for something else. Flamers work, but are best in a Chimera imo..quick response for a start plus the mobility negates some of the short range issues of Templates.

See above comment.

Sure, but squadroning does have a rather large drawback as far as damage/destroyed goes, plus you need to free points up from somewhere. I never squadron Russes until I get to 2500+ lists..never had a need to.
Still, IF I was going to squadron any Russes it would be cheap LRBT's, so you have that part correct:biggrin:..but my points still stand:angel:

PSB's are better at anti-hoard than they are MEQ lists, mainly because the AP varies, and Weaken Resolve can be negated by Psychic Hoods and that Eldar Rune etc. I would consider Chimeras really, because they are a pretty high profile target so will get slaughtered if on foot.

My 2c anyway

Alright, taking into account your comments I have devised this upgraded list. I also would like to ask some questions and make a few comments about certain units, and these will be posted in purple below the unit.

-HQ-
Arch-Magos Wilhelm Wunter (Primaris Psyker - 70 pts)
Nothing important to add here, except to add that he is "German," meaning you pronounce his name Vilhelm Vunter.

Preceptor-Savant Orley Casile (Primaris Psyker - 70 pts)
Nothing important to add here either, but to tell those of you who don't know that Preceptor-Savant is a rank in the Savant Militant (Military Psykers) which is a mixture of a General, and a Commissar. Usually they oversee all psyker activity on a certain campaign in the same way a Warmaster or commanding general would.

-ELITE-
Cultist Sorcerers (Psyker Battle Squad - 165 pts)
-9 Psykers
-Chimera

Psyker Battle Squad - 165 pts
-9 Psykers
-Chimera

Psyker Battle Squad - 165 pts
-9 Psykers
-Chimera

-TROOPS-
(Infantry Platoon)
Platoon Command: 45 pts
-4x Sniper Rifle
I only chose snipers because they are cheap, have a long range, and are generally effective. Not wanting to use points to include a chimera, this seemed like a liable second choice.

Infantry Squad: 60
-Melta Gun

Infantry Squad: 60
-Melta Gun

(Infantry Platoon)
Platoon Command: 45 pts
-4x Sniper Rifle

Infantry Squad: 60
-Melta Gun

Infantry Squad: 60
-Melta Gun

-Heavy Support-
Leman Russ Squadron (1): 170 pts
-Hvy Bolter Sponsons

Leman Russ Squadron (1): 170 pts
-Hvy Bolter Sponsons

Leman Russ Squadron (1): 170 pts
-Hvy Bolter Sponsons

Total - 1475

Alright, basically I followed your expert advise, and gave the PBS's three chimeras. I couldn't fit in an actual second troops choice of any kind from the points used on the chimeras, so I just split the one I had into two. I was thinking about maybe using the left over 25 pts to get four plasma guns, and equipping the currently melta specialists with them instead. Any thoughts on that?

You will get far better effectiveness from the PSB's now they're in Chimeras, and only one Psyker needs LOS for them all to shoot.

If you like Sniper Rifles then that's the best reason to take them...I find them terrible, even GL's outshine them for damage output.

On the Melta/Plasma issue in your Infantry...personally I'd take some HW's instead, because when you shoot the Melta the enemy will already be so close you'll probably be assaulted soon after. The Plasma obviously has longer range and I use it a lot, just in multiples....I'd go AC/GL combo myself so the Infantry can actually shoot stuff at range.

Still, do some play testing and see how you go, although I know you're not worried about effectiveness so much..which is perfectly fine.

Cheers:victory:

Edit:If you're walking the Infantry don't take the HW.
