I'm probably stirring up a hornets nest here, but being a relative newb to 40k this question must be asked. How exactly does preferred enemy work? The Universal Special Rules page doesnt make this rule very clear. Does it refer preferred enemy as in a race? a unit type? do you even have to actually state a preferred enemy and then re-roll all CC to hit rolls?

So for example with Black Templars being able to field an entire army with preferred enemy with accept all challenges oath, what might that look like? For example would preferred enemy be declared? and if so with it be for the whole army or for each individual unit?

Also, rule referrences and clear examples would be super-helpful. Thank you guys so much

About half of the time Preferred Enemy has some tag attached to it (for SW WP it's Infantry, MC, bikes, etc.), but the other half of the time it's generic and applies to whatever it is that you're hacking away at. As stated above, only works if the enemy has a WS.
