So I have been rereading Poul Anderson's pulp adventure stories about secret agents who guard the timeline and it got me thinking...

The Ordo Chronos is charged with protecting the timeline from those who would mess with causality. To do this they would have to have an idea of what is and what is not supposed to happen. Which implies they have working time travel capabilities. It would be really interesting twist if it turned out that the Ordo Chronos is the Time Patrol and that the future that the Patrol is protecting, where humanity evolves into super beings (like what the Emperor had in mind) is the future of the 40k universe.

Since the Ordo Chronos exists, that cannot be true, canonically speaking.
Would you mind citing and quoting some sources then? There's a brief entry on Lexicanum, but certainly nothing there to suggest that they have time travel capabilities. Only that they exist to study time anomalies caused by warp travel.

If they got erased than it was likely that they discovered moments in history that revealed truths that the Imperium could not accept. For example the Emperor's true ideology, or perhaps the technological marvels of the Dark Age of Technology.

In fact, its seems counter-intuitive for the High Lords or the Inquisition to sanction the Ordo Chronos for the very reason that Humanity forgets things for (relatively speaking) good reason.
