I find red paints are generally really shit. Anyone got any advice on painting red's? Maybe have some none GW red's you can recommend? I've tried vallego and they were shite too.

depends on the red, ive not painted bright red for ages, but if youre going for a good deep regal red, my favourite 3 stage is:

Scab Red -> 50/50 Red Gore/Mechrite Red -> Mechrite Red

For me I use this process:

Skull white undercoat -> watered down Scab Red -> watered down Red Gore -> Blood Red -> Red Ink - Blood Red Highlights.

Works well, gives a nice effect on robes and seals in particuler. Not sure about flat areas as I havn't tried it on that.

Well red being a transparent color it need a good base color I tend to use brown like scorched earth, bestial, or vermin fur. then starting with the darkest red I then work my way up

I use mostly Reaper paints... although the reds are no different than anyone elses'. I do, however, like Mechrite Red from the foundation range. It cuts two layers of conventional paint out, and it's a nice mid-tone so you can shade it or highlight it quite easily. And it goes over black in two thin coats or one sort of semi-thick one if it's a flat surface devoid of a lot of detail (such as, idk... a Rhino door.)

Here is what I did for this Kharn model

Red Gore/Chaos Black 50/50 to start.
Add Blood Red in increasing amounts until you get a slightly brighter shade of what you want
2 Coats of straight Red Ink to darken it up and smooth the blends.

I Strongly recommend the new Foundation paint Malachite Red as a base coat for reds. I have been using it on my epic Evil Sunz and Goff bits and then highlighting it up to blood red, its saving me a lot of time. :D

The turrets on these are just one good coat of Malachite Red over black spray with a fairly heavy Blood Red drybrush.

chaos black base
scab red
red gore
blood red (first highlight)
blazing orange (extreme highlight)
fiery orange (really tiny extreme highlight)
i tried to put a picture of one of my red templars painted this way to show you of the effect but the best pic was blurry and it wouldn't let it on anyway (image file size too big apparently and i don't know how to reduce it)
