I guess you could paint it white to start, and then thin some blue or green down and wash that over it. It's a similar effect to using ink, but without the shine that ink can sometimes leave.
That is how I do plasmaguns as well. I paint the entire coils area in Scorpion Green first, followed by a 50/50 mix of Scorpion Green and White. The final stage is straight White but applied ONLY at the very corners of the coils where they turn downwards on the gun. Gives it a very cool green glowing effect for very little effort.
I prefer blue, (starting from black) Regal blue shading, Ultramarine as the main, Ultramarine mixed with white Highlights, and white Extreme highlights
Simple but effective, I tried with Green and thought meh its ok I guess
I thoroughly enjoy making my weaponry look used... I'll paint the muzzle as if the gun were rolling off the assembly line first.
Then, I use some foam make up pads my mom didn't care for and apply a 50/50 black brown stipple over the tip, followed by some pure black to look like some muzzle burn / flashback.
For me, it will depend on the army colors. It has to POP.
Something that contrasts. Like for my Blood Ravens (deep reds, bone, black) I use the green (layers of dark angels green, goblin green and scorpion green).
For my Deathwatch kill team I used blues. Same with my Tau (T'au Sept).
I'd reccomend doing some test runs. Try different colors and see what looks the best to you.
