This isn't so much a poll as a question. How do you guys feel about playing games against non painted armies? In my case I only put painted figures on the board. I may proxy to see how a weapon or unit might work, but they are all ptd. It sometimes bothers me when players don't tale the time to paint, after all it's part of the hobby. At least I think so.

I don't mind as long as then next time a play that same opponent they have something new painted. As long as people make progress I am cool with it.

Well, snoop, new players may have just gotten their army and want to actually learn how to use it right away. I mean, there's no point in laying out a nice, pretty army if you have no idea how it works.

And which is more enjoyable, a well-played game, or a pretty-looking game?

Plus, painting takes time, talent, money and confidence.

Right now I haven't got all my minis painted because 1) I haven't got tons of time on my hands right now and I'd rather spend it playing or modeling than painting. 2) I suck at painting and I'm afraid of ruining a model I spent all day perfecting my giving it a shit-poor paintjob. 3) Given the choice between spending $20 on a half-dozen paint pots, a new codex or a new squad box/mini, I'd rather invest in making my army *better* rather than just better-looking.

When I'm finished tweaking with my army, learning the new rules and honing my painting skills, I'll sit down and paint my minis. But I;d rather become a better player, with a better army and the ability to do them justice with a decent paintjob than sit down and rush through it just for the sake of some stranger at a game store.

Me, I don't give two shits if your army is painted, primed, bare plastic, or proxied out of legos (in fact, I once fielded an all-lego IG army, complete with tanks just to see if I could). As long as the list is legal, I can tell what's what, and you know how to play it.

What I want you to bring to the table is sportsmanship and a good game. You can have the best painted army in the world, but if you're a whiny little twit who hasn't read enough of the rules, I'll start feeding you your little plastic spacemen. Or, at the very least, I won;t play with you.

Now, that said, often times chroniclaly unpainted armies are a symptom of a greater disease: Laziness. Just ebcause an army isn unpainted, doesn;t mean you;re facing a bad/lazy player...BUT, a lazy player will most often be a bad player (can't be bothered to read the rules) and probably hasn;t seen fit to put the time into his army.

There's an old saying about books, covers and judging. It applies here. Just because you find yourself facing a wall of unpainted gray and silver doesn;t automatically mean you;re facing an unworthy player. He could be trying somehting new, working on something else, a bad painted, or just a casual/part time gamer.

Amen to that. Not to mention that people that play all the time and are really good sportsmen will also grasp teh need to get their stuff painted. At my local games store we have a house rule that allows anyone with a fully painted army to get one reroll to be used in the game.

I do my best to have as much of my army painted as possible but it's never 100%. So I can hardly expect my opponent's army to be fully painted.

The fact is though, an average fully-painted army is hands down better than a beautifully half painted army.

Like Pathwinder says as long as folk make progress that's all you can ask for imo.

i have about half the 40K armies and all of them i fully painted when i first got them. but as new plastics and metals have been released i have bought them but just havnt found the time to paint them to a reasonable standard.

i dont care if i play a fully painted army or not. as long as i can see what is what. if however the opposing army had a lot of representations it would annoy me

Thanks. Yep I painted them all. They are representatives of my painted armies. I have 4 painted armies. I need to finish the Nids, but I am still working out their army list and style of play. I am currently working on my wife's S.O.B. army and my Deathwing.

I prefer playing against painted armies. It doesn't happen that often, unfortunately, but that's just the nature of the beast around here, I suppose. I hold myself to a certain standard though-- I don't use unpainted models whatsoever. I can't hold my opponents to that standard, since I'd never get to play otherwise-- but for myself, it keeps me painting and it makes the game better, I think.

I really prefer to play painted armies, one of the joys of the game for me is a nice gaming table with two or more painted armies.

I personally will NOT play with any of my miniatures proxied or unpainted. I won't use proxies because its too easy to tweak for an uber list instead of learning to use my list. And I don't enjoy painting so I set out when I restarted the hobby 6 years ago to only play with painted minis, so far so good. I paint to an average standard but not great you can see my armies i the warseer gallery.

I agree with Pathwinders original post as well. So long as the person is painting them, slow or fast makes no difference to me, then I am cool with it. I am not all that keen on playing someone's Guard army with 120 black basecoat only models on a constant basis however. I mean really, how hard is it to add a bit of colour now and again?
