What do people think of space orks. Many people ive spoken to recently have said they dont think ork's fit 40k. I'm excited about the prospect of new orky opponents to take on but many others seem to think they should just be expunged from 40k.
Orks as they are now don't fit 40K as it is now. The 3rd edition Ork codex was very similar in style, if not content, to the 2nd edition Orkish image. They can still be like drunk green hicks with superpowers, but they need to emphasise some more serious points if they want them to really fit.
They fit pretty well. The fluff in the new Ork book does a good job of explaining their place in the universe. They're different visually, which is a good thing. Their role overlaps with Tyranids, but the armies behave different enough that it's really not a big issue.
40k needs Orcs - they are like rodents - they are everywhere and they love to eat/destroy anything that they can get their hands on. But at the same time they arn't evil - they provide a force for the 40k that is destructive yet not malignant. A different flavour of enemy that people can play if they want to be bad but not tooooooo bad.
Orks are the perfect antagonists, they don't need a reason to fight, they just need to fight.
All the other races have goals or ambitions in their fighting (even 'Nids), Orks don't need that. If you need a reason for any of the other races to fight then the Orks are the prefect pretence. In how many stories based in 40K (and fantasy) are orks the enemy?
I dig Orks and can't really see 40K without them in all honesty. The background on them is just the perfect highlight to the whole 40K mythos (live for war and conquest regardless of any other considerations) that they just help tie everything else together.
Personally i like orks and i hope they make up my next army.
They are a serouse army that is a part of 40k. They represent a force that can be fought over and over....yet never wins and is never defeated.
The orks are also a scalable army....they almost always show up with an equal force to those there fighting for a good fight. Compare that to the Nids who eather show up as a scout force....or a giant horde that steam rolls the gallaxy until one climatic battle.
What other foe is allien and litterally every where so every army fights them?
Yes there humourus louts who live for war...but when your species is designed around war and probigates through war it's natural to be very warlike....
Imagine if humans only bred after a fight......we would always be fighting.
I also agree with the eldar anaylasis of the orks.
i forget the quote but basicly
"We despise the orks as crude, yet for them lifes greatest questions will never be an issue as they will never be asked." or some such....bassicly orcs are happy and have everything they want unlike other races asking questions and being unhappy...
