does anyone know anything that plays AVI video files?, I have fully updated windows media player with lots of things that "claim" to play AVI, updated quicktime, realplayer and DivX but none of them even seem to recognise avi files at all, despite people saying its a very common video format.

if its so common why does a single player not exist that seems to play them?

Have you tried VLC? That plays just about everything.

I like to use mplayer, it has opened just about every video file type that I have thrown at it so far. You can find the download with a pretty simple google search.

However, if you are watching something serialized in chunks (like, a season of House, or an animé) I would recommend KMP.
It automatically lines up things that appear in the same folder by alphabetical order, and also comes with the same codecs as the VLC player.

I have also discovered that the KMPlayer is the only one that will handle 1080p for my computer so that's pretty much it ;)
