Hello all, As the title says I'm new to Warhammer 40K although I have been interested for several years now. I bought the AoBR starter set for my son and I to learn with. Otherwise any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Chris :victory:

lol get your money back go spend 90 bucks a peice and get starter sets i bought black reach when it came out and a month later i was playing a full blown chaos space marine army and wished i hadnt spent 60 bucks on it. but i guess if you want just something cheap that you and your son can play together and find out if you are really interested in the game black reach is the way to go. buut really if this is something you both plan to do for a long term game together go get proper starting sets besides you could chose what army you are actually interested in.

eh, i had so many guys purchased from my first army that i didnt know jack about.. i dont regret. learn what you can with what has brought you in and then go with it. id rather learn to paint on something random then worry about getting it right the first time. especially when a lot of stuff resells on ebay for a decent price! :D

So you have one tactical squad, one terminator squad, commander, and dreadnought. its a fine starter mix if you ask me. if you and your son intend to play together often, dont upgrade your army without helping him upgrade his. i dont know how old he is but a tweaked army compared to AoBR orks will crush those orks every time.

you could look into getting a command squad for your commander and the rhino or razorback transport for them or your tactical marines. Rhinos you can transport 10 guys and 2 can shoot out of it, razorbacks have a 6 man capacity and heavy weapons mounted for shooty. I would think about getting a different arm for the dreadnought, because i'm partial to the assault cannon as a good quick fix. Multi melta dread has a very short range and at such low points is a large target with a very specific/limiting function. (or not though, run with it if it fancies you!)

If you we're to help your son out, get him some ranged options for his orks, lootas, big gunz, looted wagon with a boomgun, something long range shooty to support his close combat ork boys.

oh and get the current codex for space marines and orcs. i personally couldn't live with just the AoBR army lists when thinking of expanding.

MY preference is actually CSM but alas.....I had to convince "The Boss" and so had to start low (read cheap). He on the other hand was stoked about he Orks, he is 12 and borderline autistic so getting him to work on them at times can be a challenge not too mention getting him to gaming meets. Thanks for the tips, I'll post up after we play our first couple games. Also, do I need the complete 5th Ed rulebook or does the pocket book in AoBR suffice? Thanks again

well if you want to play chaos you can convert those blackreach marines into chaos just get some plastic card and a choas rhino. you can use the chaos rhino spikey bits on the marines to chaosify the marine stuff. take a exacto knife or utility knife and scratch those dumbass eagles off the models. for the dreadnought just get plastic card and cover up the front imperial emblems with plastic and then dress it up with chains and cut spike bit post small cylinders and put them on the plastic plate to look like bolts.
for the marines use the spike rods and cut them into small studs and put them on the shoulder pads and upper thigh. same with the terminators then you have a chaos starter army.

the small book goes over every rule you need to play but some of the special more in depth rules will only be in the big book. i have played for 3 years without using the big book because you learn them overtime.

excellent I'll save that $60 and put it towards new models, etc. AS far as changing the SM army, nah.... I'll learn with them and eventually build a CSM from ground up.

no clue yet, my plan is to learn the game with my SM's then jump into CSM when I have broad game knowledge so I can hopefully make some informed decisions.

On a side note, I was able to pick up the SM and CSM codex's today from a used book store today for $20.00. An excellenct deal considering I spent $30 yesterday for the Ork codex for my son. :victory:

thats cool you and your son are playing. how old is your son? and yea play SM and what not until you can build chaos. hey but i do have a solution for you.... Play the SM chapter the 'Relictors' they are a renegade army that is loyal to the emperor but believe that the best way to fight chaos is with chaos weaponry. so you could use either your SM codex or CSM dex. or you could alternate between the 2. that would be a good way to start becaus ethey use regular space marine equipment so you could just use you black reach stuff. just look them up on lexicanium. i really like them but i just like Emperor's Children better.
