I think its about time i did a marine army, having 4 non imperial armies and loving some of the marine models. I REALLY like the look of Ultramarines however for tournies I would wanna go with traits. Anyone got any ideas on how i could adapt the colourscheme enough to get away with it? Would just different chapter markings be enough. I would probably use a darker blue[regal] with UMblue used to highlight.

I'm not sure what to say.

I have made my own shcme, traits, fluff etc.

I don't like going with the flow.

But if you try to be "original" but it looks like UMs, people will always call them UM, so you might as well DO Ums.

Or DIY!

I have that very thing. I used regal blue and gold. I have now addapted a pure ultramarines army and dont use traits, but i always said i was a variant the Nightmarines (omg thats my name *GASP*) and took the traits. If you plan on doing one for tournaments, paint them like that and 'proxy' them as a variant for run play. BTW for darker i would go Night Blue (or wutever is darker than regla) people still walk up to me a say 'oh u r an ultramarine' even with regal.

Honestly Jig, I would go with an all new colour scheme that bears no resemblance to UM's if you are that worried about it.

I don't think I've played a well presented Ultramarine army in around five years.

Go Ultra be different. It will be a different painting challenge going tight on all the details rather than freestyling on gaurd camo schemes or nid colours. And should therefore be more fun.

Hmmmmm Ultramarines :cyclops:

That's actually not a bad way to look at it either. Painting the official colours will be a challenge simply because everyone knows what they look like already and you will get less slack for mistakes. LOL!!

thats the problem with my army, it doenst represent the UM's glory in details, but it can still pack one helluva punch

The first SM's I had were UM's. I painted them and the majority didn't turn out too well.

Though that was my first time painted a SM so I quess that's to be expected.

my opinion, just paint them as ultras if you like ultras!

as for the traits, well not all ultramarine captains are true adherants to the codex all of the time... (ie; captain ventris!)
perhaps your force has happened upon some terrible misfortune and thus has been forced to adapt different tactics than the codex dictates because it simply can't fight in the proper codex manner?!

basically, it's your army so play it the way you want to... if you use traits, then obviously you simply wouldn't be able to take any of the ultramarine special characters and/or units such as 'nid hunters.

cheers!

I think it would be awesome to change up the Ultramarines a bit. It would be cool to see them in a dark blue with maybe NMM bronze details, or even a watered down bronze mix. It would be like a 'true, darker side', respresenting the reality that is the 40k universe. There isn't regal blues, or bright yellows, only dark tones and suffering. Very Todd McFarlane.

I think somewhere in the GT rules pack it talks about this and says that if an army looks ike a Chapter that already has its own rules then you must those rules. You could quite easily change the chapter symbol to something else that that would maybe suffice.

OR (if you do this i have about 12 marine painted like this i can sell you) you can do them as Alpha Legion disguised as Ultramarines. It fits the fulff perectly for Alphas that they "dress up" as other chapters. They especially hate the Ultramarines. Also since the Alpha Legion do not reside within the EoT ans don't worship chaos per say, more the idea of absolute martial prowess and anarchy for the imperium, it is quite easily justifiable that they are rep'd by traited marines.

Like i said i did this a few years ago for GT doubles and the models went down a treat. I have 5 marines with hvybolters and 8 with dual plasma and the GD Ltd Ed SM as the Fist toting Sarge and aint to bothered about parting with them.
