The Imperium of Man, a galaxy spanning empire forged by the almighty Emperor during the golden age of the great crusade. An age marred only by the betrayal of the arch-traitor Horus shortly before the Emperor's ascension to the golden throne upon holy Terra. In the ten thousand years since that time, mankind has seen itself beset on all sides, both within and without, by the likes of vile xenos and treacherous scum who have turned their back on oaths and fled from retribution like cowards.

Within Segmentum Ultima lies a terrible wound in reality, a warp storm where the immaterium bleeds into the material, known only as the Maelstrom. For centuries it has spewed forth all manner of evil, with the Imperium responding by fighting back to ensure the safety of its worlds. Chief amongst these defenders are the Astartes Preases chapters, more than a dozen chapters of the noble Adeptus Astartes whose mission it is to combat the denizens of the Maelstrom to safeguard humanity.

In recent years, neighboring systems have been on the receiving end of attacks from pirate bands of Orks; and they appear to be growing in strength. Responding to this new threat, the high lords of terra tasked elements of battlefleet Ultima to hunt down the Ork pirates, shatter what holdings they have, and scatter the remnants to the stars. For this, sanctions of Imperial Guard foundings have been authorized and systems from Lastrati and Dynathi all the way to Cirillo Prime must meet the call.

It has been half a decade since that founding, the year is 876.M41 and though many Ork held worlds and pirate bases have been wiped out, the cost has been far from light. The sanction fleets ground forces are on the verge of being overwhelmed on many fronts, and so a conscription has been ratified across a dozen worlds.

Upon the agri-world of Hithoud, the conscription has been called, with the 8 million strong populace required to meet a 1% call to arms so soon after the preceding founding. For some families, this means the loss of not one, but two family members to war, never again to set foot on home.

And this is where you shall step in, as one of thousands conscripted to fight for the Imperium and safeguard your loved ones from Ork pirates. You hail from a farming world that lies to the galactic East of the Lastrati system (which itself is North-East of the Maelstrom) and is responsible for the production for wheat based food products used in over twenty systems.

Your homeworld is roughly 60% flat land, broken up by hundreds of farming communities and six starport cities spread across the planet.

And thats where we are so far; so hello everybody and welcome to No Sorrow for the Lost. An RP in which I am intending to start the players off as young soldiers to be, and see them go through their trials and tribulations. Will you survive the unknown horrors before you or will you become just another body amongst foundations?

-Rules-

  • As always, as GM my word is final so please respect it (though if theres an issue or question don't hesitate to say something.)
  • Looking for ten sentences minimum on action thread posts, not counting re-using stuff from other players posts (if player A asks a question and player B includes that question in his post, it does not count towards his minimum.)
  • Death is always a possibility
  • If you feel that you cannot continue on, or will not be able to participate for a period of time, toss me a PM (its easy enough to merge a character with the background and bring them back to the fore later.)
  • Post once per update, post one hundred times, just make sure you don't start adding in things of your own volition (and make sure each post follows the minimum.)
  • If you are unsure if your actions are going beyond the scope of whats allowed (am I GMing?) then PM me. You never know, maybe the answer is yes but you get the go ahead anyway; or maybe I say no and trouble is avoided, or maybe its not and you know for the future.
  • Again, as always, no god modding
  • And finally, I reserve the right to add more rules at a later date if I feel the need to (not the most likely but you never know.)

-Character Sheet-

Name: (Your homeworld of Hithoud is an agri-world with a culture mostly based on rural communities. Names should likely be of a more simple variety, except for the rare few who were brought up closer to the port cities.)

Appearance: (What do you look like? More on the physical, since your clothing and gear has been provided for you in the form of light brown combat fatigues and black flak armour.)

Personality: (What are you like?)

  • Quirk: (Whether nervous or bored or embarrassed or irritated, we all have little quirks and tells; whats yours?)
  • Fear: (What gets your pulse running or makes you act with less thought? What bogeyman scares you, or what trauma has seared itself into your mind?)
Background: (In general, where are you from and what are the circumstances behind your induction. Were you one of the few who were picked up by the enforcers? Did you merely get a letter and come on the appropriate date? Did you have family that was part of the recent founding and it was an honour for you to join?)

Name: Arkus Vraal

Age: 15

Appearance: Reasonably tall for his age, standing about 5'10 and possessing a lean and muscled form. Although not ripped, it is obvious that Arkus works out and keeps his body in well maintained shape. He has short, dark brown hair, with a somewhat narrow, yet noble seeming face. His eyes are a piercing light blue.

Personality: Arkus had been brought up knowing when he was allowed to speak and when to remain silent. Due to this, he can be somewhat quiet around those who are superior to him. Around others of his rank and type, he will happily chat to them. He may be reserved at first, since he was always taught to be cautious and not rush ahead. Usually, he is a pleasant boy, rather well educated and polite.

Quirk: Has a habit, for some reason he doesn't really know, of picking at the skin on his fingers, usually subconsciously. This means that his fingers may bleed without him noticing, but also mean the nerves are less responsive.

Fear: His greatest fear, due to a very harsh prank by some friends, is locked away with nothing to do, or any one to talk to. He fears going insane from simple boredom.

Background: Living with his grandfather in the foothills, outside a Space Port city, Arkus grew up not knowing his parents. Being told, truthfully, that they had simply grown fed up of life on Hithoud, charted a shuttle and flown somewhere else, they had, however, left Arkus in the hands of the father's father. He was an Ex-Guardsmen, having being honourably retired several years before the child's birth. He was strict on Arkus, yet never unfair. He knew someday, or on the off chance, that the world may be selected to provide their tithe of bodies to the Imperial War Machine. So he trained Arkus in how to survive in the wilderness, basic fighting techniques and simply how to do what he was told, yet also to think for himself. He had learned that quick thinking could save a life and still get the job done, instead of wasting time and lives following something that was wrong.

Arkus and his grandfather were faithful souls, although not fanatical by any measure. They always gave thanks to the Emperor for what they had and attended the church once a week to pay their due to the God-Emperor. The boy had been taught not to rely on others, including the God-Emperor, to do jobs for you, but you must do them your self, or be found wanting. The Master of Mankind did not give them a free thinking mind and body, simply to rely on Him to do everything for them. He believes that those whom help themselves will be the ones that the God-Emperor truly smiles upon in the Afterlife.

In his life, he is inspired by his grandfather, who survived the horrors of the galaxy and lived to speak about it. He told Arkus to be proud to fight for the God-Emperor, but told him no lies. He told him that he would see men, friends even, die on the field of battle. He told him that some sights would make him question reality, or make him turn tale a simply run. On thing he did tell him, was that never to be a pessimist. Arkus knew his grandfather was telling the truth, not trying to scare him. After some time, he accepted that it would be dangerous and thought himself ready for what ever would come. Obviously though, he will be very wrong about that.

Hope that's all right. :)

Name: Kaarl

Age: 14

Appearance: Kaarl stands an inch or two over 5 foot with short brown hair and eyes. He is built like a laborer, toned overworked lean muscles, dark tan, several small scars from working on machinery up and down his arms. His nose has been broken more than once leaving it misaligned with several lumps.

Personality: Kaarl is very outgoing. He is often chatty around friends, and more so around strangers. He is highly motivated mostly because beneath it all Kaarl wishes to help and protect the less fortunate. Years of seeing the nobility dine while families starve have left their mark. Kaarl believes the worst thing a good man can do is nothing.

Quirk: Kaarl has never met a stranger, this is because he will talk to anyone about anything. If he is nervous the young man will simply throw ideas out as they enter his head, if he is relaxed the speech is more focused and controlled. The easiest way to tell if he is under stress is his silence.

Fear: Life in the countryside has left Kaarl with a deep fear of crowded places. It just feels unnatural for people to be concentrated in one place for long.

Background: Kaarl was born and raised in a small farming town. His family consisted of 4 brothers and 3 sisters, about normal for a working family. By the time he was 2 years old Kaarl was working. He gathered tools, ran water, watched animals, and even assisted in hunting (when required). He learned that survival was not based on one man’s ability, but on men’s ability to work together. Kaarl learned to hunt, operate a land crawler, cook, raise crops, slaughter animals, keep livestock, upkeep equipment, and fight ‘raiders’ by the age of 13.

Kaarl’s selection for the guard came at the end of a very trying winter. A series of crop failures and raids caused food shortages as the working class was forced to give up most of their winter supply. By midwinter hunting parties were dispatched into to bordering woodland. Law stated that this land was the property of the nobility, however the threat of starvation was far more pressing. Late one evening after a successful hunt Kaarl returned to his family home. As he quietly entered a man called to him. The young boy, fearing it was the arbiters turned to run. He could remember the gun butt, and the sudden taste of copper in his mouth. He can remember the floor of a vehicle, and men talking. Whatever else happened he is unsure before waking face down in the dirt with a letter pinned to his chest.

Angel Encarmine, Jason, thinking all three could be childhood friends, as not uncommon in farming communities, depending on bios, maybe we have all heard stories of the guard from Arkus grandfather?

I will pm you both...

Name: Draken Arcturus

Age: 15

Physical Description: Above average height for a 15 year old, Draken is almost six feet tall. Scars from his hard life in the slums surrounding the star-ports litter his form. His long frame pulls tight the muscles on his body, giving him a wiry build. Known in the slums as 'Two Eyes' due to his Heterochromia iridum birth defect, Draken's blue and dark brown eyes are always searching for the next target to beat and steal from.

Personality: Draken is a very distant and cold individual, having seen death through most of his life, either at the hands of shipping accidents or the actions of the Adeptus Arbites peacekeepers in his slum. Has an inbred disdain for those who expect power to be given and not earned, thus may bash heads with his superiors.

Quirk: When not actively doing something, Draken frequently opens and shuts his trusty knife, an action known to put those around him on edge.

Fear: Draken is petrified of storms. Whenever heavy rains and thunder pound on the roofs of his slum neighborhood he darts for the strongest looking structure around. This fear has grown from when his brother was killed during a violent storm by the hands of a rival gang.

Background: Draken has spent his whole life fighting. Whether it be for food to eat or a bed at night, nothing has ever come easily to him. When his mother was killed by one of her 'Johns' when he was five, Draken's older brother Richter took them to the streets, and taught him how to survive on next to nothing. They survived for almost eight years until one night a slum gang cornered them in an alley. Richter managed to hold enough of them off for Draken to escape, at the cost of his own life. Two years later Draken was about to mug a port worker for food when the Arbites caught him. Given a chance, death for breaking The Emperor's laws or service in His mighty guard, Draken signed on for duty.

In regards to several characters knowing each other, go for it.

Name: Arkus Vraal
Barring any changes you make in regards to friendships with other characters, this looks good.

Name: Kaarl
Alright, though there seems to be a bit of confusion in regards to the whole 'joining' aspect here. Hidouth is being required to send additional forces, meaning that there is a conscription in effect; there is no choice, your name is picked and your going. The only real 'choice' is whether or not you go of your own accord, or the arbites drag your semi conscious form to the founding fields.

Name: Draken Arcturus
Good, though again the matter of being given a choice; Arcturus would not have been given one, just beaten senseless and left on the founding fields with Kaarl if he decided not to go willingly.:p

Name: Aleksus Orlus (Leks to his friends)

Age: 15

Appearance: Broad shouldered and full of muscle, life on a farm has sculpted Aleksus into a strong, somewhat handsome young man. He has light brown hair ( kept at shoulder length ) and sharp green eyes. His skin is slightly tan from the work in his father's fields, and his hands are scarred lightly from the past couple years of work.

Personality: Aleksus is an extrovert, quick to chat and make new friends with those around him. Especially those of the female gender. Honest (brutally) and witty, he likes to play practical jokes on people (sometimes over the top) when he feels his social status is threatened by them. Beneath this layer of immaturity he is extremely curios about the world around him especially the machinery and how it works.

Quirk: Tinkering. Machinery has always interested Aleksus, and when not romping around with his friends he spent a lot of his time around the farm tinkering with the machines that helped keep the farm going, taking them apart just to see how they worked. Many teased that he would become part of the machine cult, and he actually wanted to before the founding....

Fear: Fire. As a young boy he was messing around in the barn on his fathers property when a lamp dropped, spilling fuel over the hay covered floor and starting a fire. Trapped in the loft he thought he was dead until his father burst into the burning barn and carried him out of it. Large fires have scared him stiff ever since.

Background: Born early one morning after a particularly hard winter, Aleksus was a simple birth as far as they go. He was the 3rd child born, his parents having had 2 girls before him. His youth was unexceptional save for a barn fire that almost killed him as a young boy. Playing in the barn a lamp had fallen, starting a large fire. Luckily his father had been near enough to save him, and he escaped with no permanent scarring that was visible. The event traumatized him, and he has hated fire ever since. There were two other boys close to his age that lived nearby, and as they grew older the trio (Aleksus, Eli, and Arkus) were inseparable.

Shortly after his 15th birthday the letter came, summoning him to the founding fields for induction into the imperial guard. His parents were devastated but Aleksus was ecstatic. He was going on an adventure through the stars, and he was overjoyed when he found that his two best friends Eli and Arkus had been conscripted as well. The stars had fascinated him growing up, and he was all too ready to journey out to them and discover the galaxy. If he had truly known what waited out in the dark, he might not have been so willing to go......

Eli McCain

Appearance: Eli is average height for his age, lean built with a dark tan. He has a very boyish face, one that somehow hides his life as a farm hand's son. His hands however, give him away, always having cuts, scrapes or bruises on them. While not the fastest, nor the strongest, his stamina from working long days as a farm hamd is extremely high, along with a tolerance for pain.

Quirks:
Eli rubs the back of his neck whenever he is thinking deeply or as a nervous tick, sometimes even just out of habbit.

Fear:
Eli is always constantly performing maintenance or tinkering on mechanical objects and farm equipment, always afraid a mechanical failure will be what kills him. He also fears having to live on a hive world, always hearing horror stories about how people live worse than cattle in cramped cages.

Personality:
Eli is the playfully michevious, sometimes loud and obnoxious one of his group of friends. In contrast to this however, he can be quite serious when it matters, going from rambunctious to serious in a heart beat which can sometimes throw people off.

While he is loyal to his friends, he will let them know when he thinks they are in the wrong, which is ironic as it is usually him that has the higher likely hood of getting into trouble.

He is also one to never to start a fight if given a choice, while not a pacifist, as he will stand up for his friends, he doesn't think everything needs to be resolved with fists amongst his peers. He is very patient and genuinely tolerant of others.

Background:
Eli is the son of a farm hand. A simple life full of honest hard work. His mother and father both work and live on a farmstead owned by another family, but are treated and payed well.

Eli grew up with his two friends Aleksus and Arkus. Being fifteen, Eli is also showing an interest in girls, an interest which he shares with Aleksus, and which has on occasion landed him in trouble.

When not chasing girls, attending school, hanging with his friends, or helping around the farm, he enjoys shooting with his father. He owns a slug thrower rifle and has become quite adept at shooting and maintaining it. While his maintenance and cleaning of the weapon is borderline obsessive compulsive due to his fear of it malfunctioning, his constant maintenance of the weapon puts him at ease when he shoots.

This has resulted in him being able to tear his gun apart and re-assemble it fairly quickly.

When the order came that he was one of the chosen to join the guard, he was excited and scared at the same time. He had heard the stories from Arkus' grandfather, some of great exploits, others of endless death.

When he heard his friends were also chosen, he felt it was as much a duty to his friends, as it was a potential for danger and adventure.

This is certainly different from what I've normally done, this will be interesting
-------------
Name: Emryn Faedh

Age: 15

Appearance: Thin and wiry yet surprisingly strong, Emryn's appearance could be considered unusual by more cosmopolitan folk. His brown hair was quite long, but upon the arrival of his conscription notice it had to be cut short to regulation length. He has a pale complexion, a result of hailing from the more wetter parts of Hithoud and has a few scars, often the result of the occasional accident with his father's booby traps. Emryn has very dark green eyes, set within a rather gaunt face that would generally seem somewhat plain. He is approximately 5 ft 6 in height, but has been mistaken for beng short due to fact he sometimes adopts a more stealthy gait.

Personality: Slow to trust but loyal when it is earned, Emryn's isolated community has led him to be wary of outsiders and general prefers to keep to himself except when in the company of friends. His life as a Game keeper's son has led him to be observant, leading him to only intervene when it is necessary. When it comes to Imperial Creed, he only pays lip service; too concerned with survival and working to be concerned of a distant god judging him at every turn. Despite this irreligious attitude, he is philosophical, sharing his insights with those intersted

Quirks: Emryn has quite a Laconic perception of existence, preferring to keep most unncessary subjects short. This would even extend to his sense of humour. Also, because his father is an offworlder, some the words he uses do not appear in Hithoud's dialect of Gothic, so confusion from others is apparent.

Fear: As a young boy, Emryn had fallen into a cave and broke his leg on impact. It was after that particular day that resulted in his development of claustrophobia. It manifests in enclosed areas where the exits are not apparent. Whilst it can be controlled in most situations, in desperate times it could manifest into full blown panic if he loses control.

Background: Emryn has the blood of two worlds within him. His mother was a local farm girl; his father, Cathbad was brought over from the planet Goidelaer II where his knowledge of handling animals and dealing with unwanted intruders made him perfect Game keeper material. When the two had first met, it was love at first sight and the two were married. Two years later they conceived and Emryn was born nine months later, though his mother did not make it through the birth.

Cathbad was now left to raise a child on his own. Emryn was raised primarily within the Goidelaeri culture of his father, with hints of the culture of Hithoud so that he could interact with the people of his mother. Of course, this did not go down well with other children, whdid not see he boy as one of their own and was unfortunately subject to bullying. This led to Emryn being the wary person that he is to this day. The main source was his odd accent, which is a meld of the Goidelaeri and Hithoud dialect and his long hair , since for his father's people, a man grew his hair long and to cut it is a sign of weakness, as his hair is a divine gift. However he remained strong, as the men of Goidelaer are a martial people who are also known to be thick skinned. Throughout hi life, Emryn was apprenticed to his father, learning the trade of a Game keeper. It started with making snares to catch small animals as well as skinning them, ready for importation. Upon his 5th birthday, he learnt how to hunt with a bow, since the meat would remain more intact and unlucky eaters wouldn't find bullets in their food. When Emryn turned 11, he was finally taught how to use a gun, so that he could do the job of dispatching intruding predators or scaring off intruding poachers who threaten the Administorum pastures.

Days after his 15th birthday, his father received a letter from the planetary Governor, stating that Emryn has been conscripted into an Imperial Guard being raised on Hithoud. Both were proud no that he has a chance to defend mankind from the threats that besiege it. Before Emryn left the homestead, his father gave him an ornamented dagger, passed from father to son for when he went to war and would do so with his own.

Here it goes

-Character Sheet-

Name: Erasmus Hock

Age: 15

Appearance: Erasmus' body was honed by farm work: He's not particularly tall, but his broad shoulders and strong limbs along with tanned skin show that he spent a good portion of his time working on the fields. He has a rather ugly face thanks to a few scars (courtesy of a few animals and razor wire) and a large nose. His hair is short and black, his eyes dark brown and an accident a few days before receiving the conscription letter left him without two teeth and a third one broken in the left side of his mouth.

Personality: Erasmus was raised by his parents to accept his place in the world, first by working in the lands of the generous nobles who sheltered his family, striving to do his best on the field and dutifully attending to the church services. When the letter calling him to the Imperial Guard arrived his family was overjoyed with the prospect of receiving such honor and after packing a few meager belongings and saying his goodbyes Erasmus and the other boys of the village that had also been conscripted started their journey to the Founding Fields.

Erasmus is a simple boy, he trusts the judgement of his superiors and usually obeys without question, after all: "They're your betters, these educated men know what to do and you should always obey and respect them." as his father would say. To others of his class, he's easy to warm and trust,(even though he usually doesn't has much to say that doesn't involves farms, the Imperial Creed and a few legends his grandma used to tell around the campfire).

Quirk: When feeling nervous or embarrassed he rubs his nose with his left hand

Fear: Erasmus is afraid of strange animals ever since one of the beasts of a circus broke loose and trampled a few of his friends. And while that didn't affected his opinion of the animals used on the farm, the same cannot be said of any other new kind of beast that he may meet.

Background: Erasmus family has worked and lived in the lands of the House of Tyboc (one of the local noble families) since as far as they can remember. Since their village was a small one it took some time until the boys of the region got conscripted.Erasmus is the first of his family in generations to be conscripted and to him, his parents and siblings that's a great honor because now he will do much more good for the Emperor and for the Imperium than if he stayed and worked on the fields with his family.
