I can understand your reticence regarding the new rules, particularly since you each have 3 opponents who also use 7th ed rules. Though I would say that you could pick up just the rulebook for 8th easily enough if you have a look on ebay (if ever the fancy took you). Also, the HE models in Island of Blood are not a bad source of models for expanding your son's army at some point.
Do post some terrain pictures up if you get the chance though.
