Hello Heresy! As many of you know, I play Wood Elves in warhammer fantasy, and I do fairly well. Unfortunately, however, I play them much more competitively than most of my opponents do, and so end up with games that are little fun for either playing. As I do not wish to learn to play worse with Wood Elves, I have decided to start an Orcs and Goblins army for fun pickup games. I would like to be reasonably competitive, but not overly so. I picked up two lots on eBay with the following contents.

Lot 1 was the O&G side of Battle of Skull Pass, which includes 40 night goblins with spears, 20 with bows, 10 spider riders, a mage, a boss, a troll, and some terrain.

Lot 2 contained a Warboss on a boar, an orc BSB, a giant, a spider-riding goblin boss, 20 Boyz, 35 Black Orcs, and a snotling pump wagon.

In addition, I have 40 boyz and 20 Nobz from 40k that I can use on those nifty fantasy trays with 40k-sized holes for bases. I have other 40k stuff as well, but nothing useful.

I was thinking the following for a starting 2,000 point list.

Warboss (of some kind) on a boar
lv4 (night?) gobbo Shaman
BSB with the shrunken head (or if he can't take it, the shaman will)

40 Savage Orc Big 'Uns with EHW Big Stabbas
2x20 Boyz with EHW
40 Night Goblins with Spears
20 Night Goblins with Short Bows
10 Spider Riders

35 Black Orcs with Shields

A couple of questions. What type of orc should the characters be? And is the shaman better as a goblin or night goblin? What command should everything have? Is a warboss on a boar worth it? Or should I use something else? Should I proxy my goblin boss person as another shaman? And, more generally, did I pick the right units to include?

Cheers guys!

I came up with a list using *gasp* actual point values! Here it is, in all it's 2k glory.

191 - Orc Warboss - Glittering Scales, Talisman of Preservation, GW
134 - BSB - Armor of Silver Steel, Luckstone, GW
150 - Orc Shaman - lv2, Shrunken Head
85 - Night Goblin Shaman - lv2

405 - 35 Savage Orc Big ‘Uns - EHW, Banner, Mus
185 - 25 Boyz - EHW, Standard
175 - 40 Night Goblins - Spears, Netters, Standard
70 - 5 Spider Riders - Bows
70 - 5 Spider Riders - Bows
60 - 20 Night Goblins - Bows

475 - 35 Black Orcs, Shields, Banner, Mus

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

The orc warboss at 2K isn't a bad choice. If you're trying to get more characters in there like the list has then the regular orc is fine. The black orcs get a bit more fighty but I've run a vanilla orc warboss w/ success. As far as the boss being on a boar, I'd avoid it unless you have a boar unit to put him in.

Not sure if you labeled the orc shaman incorrectly or not but only a savage orc shaman can carry the head. You'll have to change that up if you're using just a regular orc.

As for the gobbo shaman, I usually go for the NG shaman. The mushrooms are great! ... When they're not a 1 ...

I would drop the 20 NG and pad the regular boys more or get some utilitarian items like the pump wagon or the troll (O&G are the only army that can take a single common troll as a unit).

Overall not a bad army. The SOBU for killiness, Blorcs to take out armor w/ their GWs, NG for steadfast, 2 lvl 2s, BSB, fast chaff units ...

Some things to look at getting in the future might be some war machines. Spear chukkas USED to be my go to war machine but w/ the new book ... even THOSE can misfire now. Ah, the life and times of a goblin warmachine... Another good one would be a doom diver or 2. They do an excellent job of taking care of heavy armor. If you're looking for more of a fun army, some manglers would be a good choice along w/ a 2nd pump wagon.

Thanks for the feedback! Good catch on the Savage Orc Shaman, I made a few changes to fit him in there. I also decided I should add a doom diver catapult; the results is below.

191 - Orc Warboss - Glittering Scales, Talisman of Preservation, GW
134 - BSB - Armor of Silver Steel, Luckstone, GW
155 - Savage Orc Shaman - lv2, Shrunken Head
85 - Night Goblin Shaman - lv2

405 - 35 Savage Orc Big ‘Uns - EHW, Banner, Mus
185 - 25 Boyz - EHW, Standard
175 - 40 Night Goblins - Spears, Netters, Standard
65 - 5 Spider Riders
60 - 20 Night Goblins - Bows

465 - 35 Black Orcs, Shields, Banner

80 - Doom Diver Catapult

I did keep the archers, just because I like to have something to clear chaff out of the way - I'd rather not get redirected if I can help it.

Cheers mate!

Glad I could help! Doom diver is a nice addition.

Just a heads up - the total points comes out to 2010. I know some people don't really mind but others do. Just something to watch for.

I actually dropped a mus on the black orcs but then forgot to change the points value for the unit... so it's 2000 even! I'll change that. Thanks for that, nice catch.

I may have to try the 20 NG archers for a chaff unit some time. The more I think about it the more I like it! You have ranks & shooting all for only 60pts. Perfect for going after fast cav units that try to bait you into charging so they can flee.
