Good day everyone!
I would like to say that myself and 2 kids have decided to join the ranks of Warhammer and are getting into the game. I have a few friends that play and I'm looking to get started. Of course - with every game, a person needs help in knowing where to start ........

My primary Amry is the Orks. Why? I like the idea of running staright into the enemy and smashing teeth in, as I go. *I realize that I'm posting on the Chaos thread, so please ignore this comment*

My secondary is Chaos Marines. I love the Vengenace Box and I really like the faction - Black Legion. The story behind them - I would have to say is almost perfection for the way I want to play. All I have for this group, is 5 Marines ........ thats it. Again - looking for suggestions for a 1,500pt Army, nothing really big and fancy.

Hi man, welcome amongst the Heretics!
I'll go to the point: do you want a background based army or a competitive tournament army?
Since i don't know your preferences, i'll suggest you something n between

HQ
For a really story based stereothipical Black Legion, you could buy Abaddon.
Otherwise i suggest a Biker (stronger)/ teminator ( fluffier) sorcerer or lord

TROOPS
If you choose Abaddon you'll want to get Chosens and load them with fancy weapons ( i suggest plasmaguns and meltaguns)
If you got the biker lord, you could decide to give him a Chaos Mark to unlock some Cult Troops from the Elite section (for more competitiveness). Otherwise I'd just go with black marines, with squads divided in clear roles :
10 man, all close combat + pistol, 2 flamers, power claw, to hunt enemy infantry and hordes;
another 10 man 2 meltaguns, rhino w/combimelta, to hunt enemy vehicles and Monsters; another 10 with missile launcher and plasmagun, maybe in a rhino w/ havoclauncher, for long range support

ELITES
If you have Abaddon or Terminator HQ, go for 4 terminators, maybe with a couple of combimelta/plasma
If you have money to spare, get a Land Raider to roll with them as a dedicated transport.
Otherwise I'll skip this section

FAST
An heldrake is a must. ALwais. Don't ask. Buy. :biggrin:
If you choosa a Biker HQ, you'll want to escort him with 5 bikers. Choose a role for them and arm them accordingly (ful melta, full flamer, i'm not a fan of the full plasma here)
Raptors are an adequate choice either, maybe less resilient.

HEAVY
An havoc squad is mandatory. Your take on the weaponry.
Anti infantry: autocannon or heavy bolters
Anti Tank: missile launchers/lascannons
Anti Monsters: lascannons
You could mix similar weapons to add flexibility. EG 2 missile launcher & 2 Autocannons, or 2 heavy bolters & 2 Autocannons (only against tyranid! )
Vindicator (harder to use) /Predator (just effective from the beginning) tank and obliterators might be your second (but not less effective) choice

Your spread looks pretty good.
I am considering to pick up Abaddon or a Chaos Lord and then supporting him with a squad of Terminators. Is it required to carry Cultists, or can I go staright Marines? I really don't want to get into the Possessed guys just yet, until I get more comfortable in the game.

well, cultists are not mandatory. they simply add a cheap scoring unit.
If you don't buy a Landraider for the terminators then you can hace 5 of them, to add the reaper autocannon.
For the rest, "common" marines are tough and flexible enough for any role you can imagine
Possessed are only for story based lists, mind you. In game, they suck hard.

Well, Abaddon is the Warmaster of the black Legion. He lets you choose Chosen Marines as troops. Chosens are famous for their costly but effective weapon options, such as plasma, melta guns and flamers or the sub-par power weapons loadout.
Taking abaddon without chosens is like eating a melt icecream. Half the pleasure.
Plus abaddon is a beast in cc

Lol - Sorry maybe I didn't ask the right question. I am aware of who Abaddon is and his faction of the Death Legion (its who I plan on building) but what I was asking, was about these "CHOSEN". Are these actual figurines or something else. I can not find on the Games Workshop sites.

eheh no prob. Chosen, at this moment, are represented on the game field two ways:
1) the Dark vengeance set give us 6 chosen, 4 with various power weapons and 2 with bolters. The minis are great in details and coolness, but are a waste of points in game
2) regular chaos marines. that is. i suggest to model this guy with a lot of personalization, since this models will represent centuries old Marines, chosen amonsgt chosen, blessed by the dark gods. So, many trophies/ mutations/ bits and oddities, a lot of weapons (ccw, pistol, bolter, granades, just for the base model!), modified weapons and a nicely done paintjob will do great tings for you
If money is not an issue you could buy some forgeworld conversion bits to add some spice to the regular marines.
I have my 5 melta gun wielding chosen, showing their allegiance to slaanesh in bright colours such as pink, acid green and flashing yellow, they are highly personalized, but are otherwise "common" marines

I have looked into the FRogeWorld site, that you mentioned. Can we use these bits in OUR models? I do understand that their models are slightly different then ours, but what about tournament plays and such? God, I feel like such a newb

forgeworld models are sometimes an issue, cause they have rules not immediately know by everybody (eg another frigging manual to buy). But with a previous agreement there should be no prob with your opponent. About the tournaments: forgeworld is a GW branch, so...
The modify sprues and bits, hower, have no issues at all. you can just buy as many fancy bits you want to customize you regular marines into something cooler and "shinyier". Or you can buy some FW model and use it as a proxy for something "regular"
