What's the general approach with armys when a new codex coes out?

Is it still OK to field an army uder the old codex, or is it new codex only?

Should old armies untils be re-pointed to fit the new codex?

I'm applying this to Ork mainly 'cos I'm not too sure what to do about my Ork army.

You need permision from other players before you can use an outdated codex but the older this codex gets the less permision you will get and in officail tournements you need an updated army so I suggest getting the new codex and improving your army. For instance 6 pt boys and your still using crappy more expensive orks. And 4 wound warboss I would prefer to use those rules than the old ones so Change over as soon as you can.

Yes, but those crappy expensive boyz get a Nob with a free day in the Armory and the Choppa rule. And they can have more than one Heavy Weapon per 10 boyz, and they can have Burnaz in squads, and the Tankbustaz can shoot at anything they want!!!

EDIT: Also, Looted Vehicles, Extra Armor, CHOPPAS!!!!, PKlaws in Boyz squads, Grot cover save rerolls, Loota boyz, Flash Gitz, Ard' Boys, come on man! GW blew the Ork dex' away with idiot rules and even more idiot taking-away-old-rules.

But to answer your questions you do have to ask permission to use an old dex'.

Right when the new Dex come out you can probably play with regular joe people with the old Dex just by saying "I havent had time to update to the new Dex do you mind playing against the old one?" and most people shouldnt have a problem. Now 2-4 months down the road dont try it. You should have the new Dex within 2 months minimum. It all really depends on where your gaming at, how strict are house rules, how legal conscious the gamers are, and just your local gaming community in general. If its friends it shouldnt matter... if its strangers or local tournaments I wouldnt even try it.

OK, thanks for the info.

With regards to figures, the Boyz are similar between the two Codexs so I'm not going to have to change them. What about the warbikes? Can I use the old 'plain' warbikes in an official army, or do they need to be the new style only?, or can I mix and match, as long as I pay the new costs?

You can always use old models. I routinely play against an army comprised of old-pattern Rhinos and RTB01 beaky Space Marines. An ork is an ork, even if he's a cookie cutter plastic or the newest release. Even Games Workshop won't tell you you have to have the newest models in a tournament setting-- it's unusual to see since a lot of people build armies for specific high-profile things, but for Rogue Trader events, it's not uncommon to see old stuff.

Actually people can't make you not use old models at all. Nothing illegal about it.

As for to update or not I say it's a game, rules will change. My opinion is roll with the punches and adapt.

Although the new models for warbikes, and wartrukks are awesome IMHO.

I've got the new codex, and the Spearhead box set. I'm just a bit slow with the painting and I still haven't finished the battleforce from the previous codex. What I didn't want to do would be to waste effort finishing it, if I then couldn't use the figures.
Thanks for the answers.
