I'm a WHFB just starting out in 40k with a Chaos army. Purchases so far are the Dark Vengeance chaos figures and a daemon prince.

For whatever reason, I tend to prefer my chaos undiluted and undivided, so I'm leaning towards a Word Bearers scheme.

So, two questions: what are people's thoughts on using god-specific units like Noise Marines and marks in an undivided legion such as Word Bearers? Too unfluffy?

Secondly, as I build towards 1000 and 1500 points, what units should I be looking to acquire if I want the force to be reasonably competitive? I don't have any particular opponents in mind, so something of an all-comers force.

I'm thinking some spawn wouldn't go amiss. Surely I can't go too far wrong with terminators? Presumably I'll need a couple of squads of vanilla CSMs?

Any and all thoughts appreciated (within reason).

Hi. In the Word Bearer novels, there is a squad of Berserkers led by a bloke called Khalaxis, who the others tolerate because they're really good at killing. So no, it doesn't go against fluff. Noise Marines have always appealed to me personally, but how big a squad would you be running?

Basically when the heresy ended most legions split up and most became there own warbands or mercenaries. So a Word Bearer leader in a Word Bearer army could recruit some of those mercs if he wanted. Or of course they might just be in it for themselves.

Word Bearers are however traditionally rather close minded when it comes to outsiders as they still have their own wierd twisted version of a religion.

I'll be looking to build to 1000 points initially, so I'd only be thinking initially of one squad of about 5 chaps.

My suggestion:

1000 pts

Terminator Sorceror
3rd level
Spell Familiar
Force Axe
(150)

4 Terminators
4 combiplasma
1 chainfist
(160)

5 Marines
meltagun
combimelta
Rhino
(130)

5 Marines
meltagun
combimelta
Rhino
(130)

5 Noise marines
blastmaster
(125)

5 Noise marines
blastmaster
(125)

5 Nurgle Spawns
(180)

At 1500 could add:

Heldrake w/baleflamer
(170)

3 Bikers
2 Meltaguns
combimelta
(100)

3 X 1 Nurgle Obliterators
(228)

So, terminators, marines, spawns, bikers and drake form the core, while noise marines and obliteratos are mercenary forces or more devoted followers of a peculiar god.
