(Not really sure this should be posted)

As the title says I play against my friend who also uses space marines

In 1000pts he uses 2 dreadnoughts a chaplain with jump pack in a 10 man squad of assault marines and i think 2 units of six tactical marines.

he has beenet me 7/10 times and its getting VERY annoying. I've tried a shooty army and a combat army but he still beats me. I've even used my practically unbeaten Necron list against him and geuss what...he beat it. It seems the army list I posted on another forum a few years ago that HE HAS RIPPED OFF!! off is pretty tough. I don't want to confront him about the ripping goff yet.

So any ideas, tactics or lists that are good to take him out?

I have access to:
plenty of HQ all 3 types and cammand squads
3 dreadnoughts
a combat veteran squad
8 assault terminators
5 terminators 2 assault cannons
8 scouts 6 snipers a heavy bolter and a sgt
18 bolter armed tacxtical marines
2 lasccan marines
1 heavy bolter
1 multi-melta
1 plasma cannon
4 models which could be used as sgts
2 plasma guns
2 melta guns
3 bikes 1 plasma gun 1 melta gun and sgt
2 attack bikes 1 multi-melta
2 predators 1 lasconed up and 1 autocann and heavy bolter sponsons
1 land raider

anything helpful will be useful.

Well...priority one would be nuking those dreads. Lascannons should do the trick, so a dev squad and the predators. The assault cannons on the termies should do the trick as well. Plasma Cannon is good.

At 1000 points though, termies are spendy.

Sounds like he has the dreads as a firebase, and assault troops to get in your face (led by the Chappy which hurts)...and his troop choices are there because he has to.

If it were me, I'd send out a squad of scout snipers to try and pin him down, or hold him up. The rest tac marines with the las cannons and plasma cannons as troop choices (with plasma guns as special weapons). Take a dev squad with the rest of your heavies with as long a range as possible. I
I'd take a predator too with the las cannons.

Try and deny the flank if possible, or simply force him to chase you.

Maybe 2 5man squads 1 melta and Vt sg with pf. who are drop podded. Thats 300 pts. Throw in 2 dreads with regular armaments to meet his assault marines. Thats 505. Use your remaining 500 points to throw in the manditory squads and maybe a chappy. Assault marines die in sustained assualt, so keep your squads close and charge in to him with your dreads and with your tac squads. Drop pod the squads behind his dreads and watch him cry. :)

While two dreadnoughts may seem overwhelming, they are rather slow, and represent a sizable chunk of a 1000 point army. Points are at a bit of a premium, so I'd take missile launchers instead of lascannons-- they're nearly as powerful and against armor 12 the difference is pretty negligable. No need to have a Devastator squad-- just give one to a pair of tactical squads. They don't even need to be 10-strong... in fact, five-man fire teams will probably do it.

I'd consider using Trust Your Battle Brothers as a trait, if you're not playing to any specific fluff. Taking an HQ of any sort on foot to lead a couple tactical squads armed for middle-range shooting (so perhaps a heavy bolter and plasma rifle in each, or, since you've only got a single heavy bolter, a multi-melta in one and a heavy bolter in the other) with True Grit will give you a solid and flexibile core which will be an even match for an assault marine in close combat, but will have the edge shooting them on the way in. Distribute power fists to your sergeants.

Keep in mind that ultimately, you're not fighting much armor, and if you can shred his infantry, he's pretty much done. There isn't much in the way of models on his side-- you really just have to focus on those Assault Marines, and having things like a Destructor to rain fire upon them helps. It sounds odd, but it's better to make a Space Marine take three armor saves than it is to shoot him with an anti-tank weapon outright, since anti-infantry weapons sometimes do more than one casualty to Space Marines, and you can pretty much bank on at least failing one of three armor saves, so you're getting the same effect with possible higher returns than a lascannon.

I'd give something to this effect a try:

im a bit rusty on marines, but i dont think you can get multi-meltas in tac squads can you??
if so go with a melta, free up some points

failing that go with the multi-melta, slightly less manouverablity (or however you spell it) but twice the range and twice the melta rule range.

Yeah, tac squads can take multi-meltas.

But it's a good point about meltaguns. I've not used them much, but I've not played much against armies in power-armour. As that changes I can see more meltaguns coming into the list.

your man threat is the assault marines, a 10 man squad led by chaplain in 1000pts has the potential to rip right through an army if things go well. Either countercharge or shoot the crap out of them. A libby with might of hero's could do well[on bike] to run in and chop through half the unit before they even strike back. taking plasma cannons would force him to spread the unit out more than usual allows him to easily do this. Vindicators are another thing that could work well. 1 well placed shot and thats a dead squad, plus str10 ap1 is pretty good vs dreds too :)
Nother one to go for could be your terminators. I'd lead them with a libby with familar, who's job is to kill the chaplain, and the termies can rip the squad to pieces.

What hvy weapons does he use in his squads and on the dreds? my guess lascannons and assault cannons?

Overall though i dont think lists win games but how there used. If he's sticking to this game in game out you should get a feel for how he's usingthem and get an idea of how to counter them. Do the assault marines hang back to counter charge while the guns take there toll? Do they fly foarward full tilt to engage the enemy at the earliest oppertunity? or is he cautious with them, looking for ways of moving them forwards whilst keeping them hidden. Do the dreds march forwards to support the assault marines or do they hang back to protect the gunline???

Thanks guys you have really helped. To answer some questions he uses 1 dred with lascannon and missile launcher and the other has assault cannon and dred combat weapon. With the assault squad he tends to hold them back until turn 3/4 after he has peppered me with his lon range heavy weapons first.

a good thing to do would be to put your assault terminators in a beefed up land raider. Use them to take down the assault and tactical marines. to back them up, use the scouts with the snipers and the heavy bolter. use the lascannons to take out the dreads and back them up with the meltaguns. then take out the chaplain with your dreads.:eek:k:

might seem like a bit of a short answer but i always figure the best way to beat marines esp cc oriented ones with marines is to cram as many las and plas cannons as possible meta guns (heavy flamers have worked pretty effective for me to) plasma pistols never hurt eiher throw in a few power weapons and fists....basically anything that will ignore an armor save or causes instant death

this however only works to an extent (contradiction i know) as all this is expensive so i guess its just a case of finding a balance where you have a deacent ammount of all these goodies without being out numbered

hope i helped
