hey heresy guys. i havent posted here in awhile im glad to see things goin well. So i am in the prossess of aquiring a 3k+ necron army. now i have never played necrons nor have i seen them played since my return to the hobby.but have allways loved the look and feel of them. so any suggestions? what are some basic tactics that i should know and plan on using to be sucsesfull? all i realy know is lots of warriors and lords with resserection orbs :D any suggestions would be helpfull. i plan of adding a phalanx and more warriors to my army for apoc. this is my new play army while i rework my chaos from scratch.

Not a Necron player myself, but what I know is:
1 anything that ignores armour saves must be good (especially up against power armour, termies etc);
2 leadership tests (for the other guy) are your friend.

Other than that, it's 'walk forward really slowly looking horribly menacing', isn't it?

yeah, lords and resurrection orbs are always good. as are lots of warriors, immortals and destroyers. also, a monolith wouldnt go amiss!

the wbb rule means that you have to think carefully when setting up and moving your army to make sure they always get their wbb. eg, making sure that there is always another unit of the same type within 6", and if not, making sure there is a resurrection orb closer than 12".

oh, and scarab swarms are always worth a look into. swarmy bases are cool =]

I actually play Necrons and it sounds that you already know the basics, lots of warriors and lords with ressurection orbs. Destroyers are a must there mobility and fire power is immense. I tend to form my warriors in a fireing line and anvancing occasionally. Put wraiths on the flanks and ccp said scarabs are cool especially with disruption fields. Monoliths are the back bone of a large Necron army with their power matrix. For elite steer away from pariahs they are too exspensive and are usually a first target of your opponent.

i used to play necrons and i would go with Lord on this. lots of units that increase your phase out count helps, aswell as a monolith as a major backbone. a large necron army without a monolith is stupid, to say the least.

after establishing a good warrior base with lord w resurection orb and phylactery for survivability i would go for destroyers and heavy destroyers and finally a monlith. after that, go for whatever, its just personal preference.

hope it helps

Worst game I ever had vs Necrons was with my Tau believe it or not. The problem was that the entire 2000pt army had 1 Res lord, 1 Tomb spyder, 2 Heavy Destroyers and then ALL troops. You just can't kill enough of them with that WBB roll to win. A Necron list like that is probably THE toughest army in the game, hands down.

id have to disagree wraith, with my chaos i played a 2000 point match with a simular list -tomb spider +lord and a squad of regular destroyers but large warrior base, wasnt able to do much in the terms of shooting but once you get in CC power weaps and fists just chew through them, infiltrating chosen with power weaps and melta guns + deep striking termies + termy lord, course you dont have that CC with tau and just taking out that massive amount of WBB with just shooting, not fun =/

there are 2 key ways of using necrons, the lots of warriors route, and the minimum warriors route. I generally go for the latter as i like to have some variety in my list where possible.
When it comes to your units, i find taking 2 of each of any that are going to be important to your game plans is a good idea, that way they can stick together to ensure those wbb roles etc.
The monolith is a great addition to the army, mainly for all the things it does for your army. Re-roll wbb, teleport into rapidfire range, teleport away from cc, disrupting the enemy. It makes the humble warrior into possibly the best troops choice in the game.

immortals and destroyers are both great units, so most armies can't go wrong by starting of with a couple of units of them for mobile firepower. I think wraiths are really good when used properly, and have often had them wins games for me against opps that dont rate them. You just have to make sure there not facing down lots of small arms firepower. Scarabs can forfill the same cc role, but at the opposite extreme. They can handle the boltgun shots, but can suffer vs lots of str6+ weapons fire.

The list i use at the moment which i think is quite balanced and gives a nice mix whilst still being able to handle most lists at 1500pts is

Necron lord on destroyer body, warscythe, res orb[goes with wraiths]

10 Necron warriors
10 Necron warriors

4 destroyers
4 destroyers
3 wraiths

2 hvy destroyers
1 hvy destroyer
Monolith
