How do they work? xD

I've come to the conclusion that for each model within range of each gun, you roll a dice and then for each roll you get that many shots. As great as this seems; I got 78 shots against a squad of ten Imperial Guardsmen and it's didn't quite seem fair... So how do they really work?

Gauss Flux Arc Projectors: The Flux Arc projectors will fire D6 shots at every enemy unit with a model within 12" of the Monolith. Each 'weapon destroyed' result inflicted on the Monolith reduces the number of shots at each target by -1.

Reading over it I got a second though; Would a squad of ten guards have just ONE dice roll per gun in range and LoS?

each UNIT not each MODEL is they key

So if there is a squad of 10 guardsmen then you get D6 hits on that UNIT. If there are multiple squads within range you get D6 on each squad, or UNIT
