So here's a brief list of squads that I've enjoyed running. I personally don't like full size swarms as they require a lot of precision movement for the entire course of the game to pull off, and I can just about manage precision movement until about turn 5, when it all goes to hell!

So the default mini is 3 Academy Pilots plus Howlrunner, for 4 TIEs total. What plays well with them? Any of the following...

Academy Pilot (12) (TIE Fighter)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

"Howlrunner" (18) (TIE Fighter)
Stealth Device (3)

Krassis Trelix (36) (Firespray/Slave 1)
Ion Cannon (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Total: 100

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

"Howlrunner" (18)
Stealth Device (3)

Omicron Group Pilot (21) (Lambda Shuttle)
Darth Vader (3)

"Mauler Mithel" (17) (TIE Fighter)
Swarm Tactics (2)

Total: 100

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

"Howlrunner" (18)
Predator (3)
Stealth Device (3)

"Echo" (30) (TIE Phantom)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Recon Specialist (3)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Total: 100

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

"Howlrunner" (18)
Stealth Device (3)

Patrol Leader (40) (Decimator)
Darth Vader (3)

Total: 100

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

"Mauler Mithel" (17)

"Howlrunner" (18)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Stealth Device (3)

Soontir Fel (27) (TIE Interceptor)
Push the Limit (3)
Stealth Device (3)
Targeting Computer (2)
Royal Guard TIE (0)

Total: 99

Of them all, I like Echo the best, followed by Trellix. There's something uniquely satisfying about Ion-ing something at R3 in the initial joust, then popping into R1 next turn and unloading 16 Red dice with rerolls at it...

What do you think of using a Decimator with the mini swarm? There isn't a lot of room for points and I've played it (I think) a bit more effectively with only two Academy Pilots (and those other 12 points spent on Chiraneau, Determination, Moff Jerjerrod, and Rebel Captive for the VT-49 as well as Swarm Tactics for Howlrunner) but:

Howlrunner (18)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Captain Oicunn (42)

Isanne Isard (4)

I have a Deci in the OP crewed by Vader - "Patrol Leader" is the generic Deci pilot.

I do think Deci's need more points sunk into them in order to make them viable, so running them with two TIE's (probably named ones) is a better bet than 4, for sure.

These are very nice! As somewhat of an xwing noob I still have no idea what I'm doing listbuilding. My girlfriend and I have a combined collection of 2 coresets, an y-wing and an interceptor expansion. Which would be fun expansions for both sides you reckon?

Get both aces expansions, gives you an A and B for rebels and a pair of interceptors for Empire, plus LOTS of upgrade cards. Also tends to be in stock.

You also want one X wing expansion and One (or two) Tie Fighter expansions as they give you the rest of the pilots for them. You especially want Howlrunner for empire (the heart of every tie swarm) and Wedge ANtilles (super killy) for the X-Wing.

If you want large ships then the YT2400 and the Decimator are both new and in stock. The Millenium Falcon is supposedly fun but nigh on impossible to get, through the SLave-1 is back in stock again.

Frankly everything is worth picking up. It's one of the few systems where pretty much every ship can find a fit in a list somewhere, with the main exception possibly being the HWK-290 as that only really works as a support ship, so for 100pt games it doesn't seem to pull it's weight very well. In bigger games where it's less of an easy target, it's significantly more effective.

The next step in your collection would probably be Rebel Aces for the good guys and maybe Bomber/Defender/Phantom for the Empire, or potentially a Slave 1/Decimator if you fancy trying a large ship. The Shuttle gives some nice crew cards, but is tricky to use effectively until you get a lot of practice with movement due to being so unwieldy.

After that, just plug away getting one of everything and then see what you enjoy using and buy more of it! Eventually the Rebels will really appreciate a YT1300 and 2400, once you've got the hang of not hitting asteroids...

Edit: Ninja'd ^^ also consider that the pilot cards can be found separately on ebay for a few pennies, so if you want more options for pilots but not necessarily more models, you could look into that.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'll look into getting the aces packages, howlrunner and maybe a slave 1/falcon.

Tell me about not flying into asteroids... I almost lost a game yesterday because I did 2 damage to my remaining 2 tie fighters by flying them into asteroids in 2 turns.

TIE's especially hate rocks, as they take crits straight off the bat. At least Rebels can avoid that if they've not taken fire so far. It all gets better the longer you play!

...right. I knew that, was just testing you!

Maybe it's worth adding the ships that the Pilots are flying just for us noobs (I even have that card)? I get most of what you (and others more versed in the game) post, but I do a ton of cross referencing with my files of card types to keep up still. Not sure how many other peoples have all the cards downloaded to their computer for reference, though this list goes a long way to fixing that.

I simply use http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/ when I'm online to find cards and make up lists quickly. If I don't know what an astromech does, for example, I just pull down an X-wing and look through the options.

I actually thought about editing the post afterwards, but was on my way out of the house. I can do it now. :)

Of course you could just take Dash and the Outrider, and hey, who cares about rocks?
