In the Battletech Universe, technology is also controlled by a religious sect that is based on Earth called Comstar. They bear a strong similarity to the Adeptus Mechanicus. They both guard technology jealously from all outsiders, don't fully understand the tech they have, and believe that the incantations they repeat before the machines help make them work.

why does the name make me think of onstar?
