Personally, no. I have countless Russ' and have never included a sponson. Generally I keep my tanks moving to support troops and so close combat infantry can't score auto hits. It works, plus with the spare points you can eventually buy something that would be more useful. Then again, thats my opinion. Also don't be sorry, the added flavour is appreciated. k:
