A quick Question, are they worth it?

From experiance side sponsors are not worth it to me (as i play marines). But i have a new guard army and asking the generals of untold legends to guide my small force into a greater fighting force worthy of serving the grand imperium.

Sorry for going overboard but it added flavour!

And thank you to any who reply to my question :victory:

Personally, no. I have countless Russ' and have never included a sponson. Generally I keep my tanks moving to support troops and so close combat infantry can't score auto hits. It works, plus with the spare points you can eventually buy something that would be more useful. Then again, thats my opinion. Also don't be sorry, the added flavour is appreciated. :eek:k:

EDIT: Also, reading this thread might help: http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=63883&highlight=sponsons

flavor is always needed!! otherwise it would be bread....

anyway, enough food talk!

sponsoons could be useful, e.g. punisher with heavy bolter sponsons give you 3 heavy bolters when sationary!(inc. hull mounted) and 9 str5 ap4 shots is not to be sniffed at!

also, exicutioner with plasma cannon sponsons gives you 5 (yes 5!) str7 ap2 blasts when stationary. very killy, but very expensive.

like dan said above tho, if your gonna keep your russ moving about the place, dont bother, you'll never get to use them. however if they will be staying as a solid firing platform, go nuts! tho make sure they compliment the russ varient your using :D

for me sponsons are a no, yeah they cost allot of points, but the main reason its a no for me is because I don't like the look of them at all, I think there silly, and since my russ will hopefully move every turn I don't need them

Like many issues that come up with a Guard list there are pluses and minuses when considering an item, and Sponsons is one of them.

Unlike Stella, I don't like the look of a Russ without sponsons, or track guards for that matter, so all of my long ranged (weapons-wise) ones have them modelled on, while the shorter ranged ones don't.

Mobility is important on the shorter ranged Tanks as they need to be up close to the enemy to do its job, the longer ranged ones not so much.

There's nothing wrong with having a firebase - type Russ that puts out a ton of firepower, or using it as an area-denial - type unit that will make an opponent think twice about moving something up that flank.

I think that there isn't a single answer and both builds have their benefits.

Side Sponsons certainly have their uses. I'm a CSM Berserkers player, and nothing fills me with terror more than my friend's Leman Russ Demolisher /w Lascannon and Plasma Sponsons. He just sits that thing where he knows my zerkers have to go, and then the death begins.

I can see why this wouldn't work against ranged armies, but for anyone who uses alot of CC, side sponsons can really mess you up.
